Or maybe unoffcial I don't know. I would really love to ask some questions of you guys about how to make my PC run the way I want it to. Robr has been a great help to me through pm everytime I have asked. I really want to fix lots of things and would like to ask multiple questions over a period of time until I get my current laptop working just the way I want it to. I have called and called again the local guru but he hasn't returned any of my calls.

Here is my first set of questions, keep in mind I am a complete idiot when it comes to computers.

I want to close my laptop or not touch it for however long it takes to go into sleep mode, where it makes the cricket sound, but then when I open it back up I want to be able to use it immediatly. I don't want to wait for it to reconnect to the internet what I want is for it to never disconnect.

Secondly, I would like to have the junkmail folder go directly to the deleted folder. Also when I delete the deleted folder in the email I don't want to have to confirm it in the second box. I just want it to delete and get on with it, no second step. The way the email is set up now I delete the emails in the junk folder then confirm it again in a second box, then delete the emails in the deleted folder and confirm that in a second box. Seems to me those 4 steps could be in just one click.

I have a list of things that annoy me to no end about how this laptop works. I would appreciate any help anyone can give. Thanks in advance.

steve,

glad to help: place them both in your new ferrari, ship the car to me and in ~2 weeks i'll send at least one of them back in working condition :)

your pal,
hal

The laptop thing most likely won't work unless you set it to not actually go to sleep when the lid is closed. That opens a world of danger though as most people close the laptop to move it, and unless it is sleeping the drive will still be spinning. Not to mention it'll just keep sucking your battery.
Hardly ever use just the battery almost always plugged in. I open and close it several times an hour. It goes into sleep mode even if I leave it open.

Go to Control Panel--->Power Options---> then make the changes you want and hit "apply".

YES!!! first problem solved and another annoyance fix was also found in the control panel thingy. I set the brightness for the screen to stay bright when running on battery. This is awesome thanks so much.

Anything on how to fix the email?

you can set the deleted folder to automatically empty when outlook is closed... at least that'll be one click less!

How badly do you want to fix the email? I'd love to be driving around in a nice F-car for a few hours next weekend!

steve i dont mind if you continue to ping me with questions, in any case what version of outlook are you using? outlook 2003, 2007 or some other variant? for the most part you can probably just ignore that spam folder. it's not a bad idea to keep it around for a little while anyway since spam filters aren't 100% perfect and you can end up with real email in your spam folder from time to time.

i peruse mine once a week in outlook (2007) then just right click, and select empty junk mail folder. now if you want to ignore that advice and you're running 2007 and just want it deleted:

select tools>options
then click on the junk email button
then check the box that says 'permanently delete suspected junk email instead of moving it to the junk email folder'. If you do that, I'd at least set (in the same location) the junk email protection level to low.

All the items on my pc are a issue with time. I have a lot to do in one day and anything that I can "make faster" is really going to save a lot of time for me when all the little 30 second "slow me downs" are added up at the end of the day it turns into hours.

The one thing that bugs me the most is the confirm screens after I try and delete my emails. If I didn't want to delete them then I wouldn't be doing so and I don't want to have to confirm it AGAIN. Also I am emailing a lot of pictures around of real-estate and I have a huge stash of them in my email to look at later when on the phone with the person I sent the picture to. So I have to constantly clean out the junk mail folder and the deleted items folder or I go over my quota of storage space.

Just now trying to type this reply I have some fricken thing trying to install an update that keeps popping up and I have to keep confirming and clicking and spending time on something that I don't want to be doing right now. I wish the damn thing would update on it's own and I don't have to interact with it for it to get done.

However the pc staying connected when I came home tonight was wonderful and I would like to thank everyone for their help especially rob for answering ALL of my PM's with on the money advice every time. I really wish I had the time to know PC's as well as some of you guys do, but it is just not my bag you know.

I have a list of other annoyances that I will post after the ones I have posted are fixed.

thanks to everyone.

Steve

What's left to be fixed from the first round?

I have to fix the email thing tomorrow when I get a second. After that I will find my list I made last month.

You guys should do a pimp my pc show. what you guys know about pc's is a lot more than most people know and I am talking about just the simple stuff.

Here's one example of something I knew that a friend of mine didn't. He was entering his name address etc... on a website to order something. He was typing in the info and then using the mouse to click in the next box. I showed how to use the tab feature to automatically move to the next box. He was stunned. He had been using the mouse to move to the next box for years.
It is the little things like that which I want to know. All the little tricks to speed up and get more out of the pc in the little time I get to use it each day.

Ok I went through every tab at the top of my email page and found nothing about how to have the deleted file drop all the messages when I close the page.

Okay, I don’t use outlook for my home computer but just going off of memory I believe you can get rid of the delete confirmation message whenever you delete something by clicking on tools > options > other > advanced options > uncheck “warn before permanently deleting items”.

As far as having the junk mail folder go directly to the deleted folder, you’ll have to wait till I go to work on Tuesday to write down the exact steps on how to do this. I can’t remember how off the top of my head and like I said earlier, I don’t use outlook on my home PC.

Oh yeah, this works for outlook 2003. I’m not positive the steps are the same with other versions. Hope this helps....

This goes back to my question of what version of Outlook are you running?
Is there a Help>About option? That usually will tell you the version. I just need to know "Outlook Express", 2003 or 2007, etc. Not the whole 1.232.431.232 type designation.

says 2006 version 6.0

I have no idea what that is, there is no such thing as Outlook 2006. Could it be Outlook Express? I assumed this was your new Vista laptop (which doesn't come with OE) but if it's your XP laptop then that would make more sense.

Yeah it is the new vista laptop. The copyright is 2006

says...

version 6.0.6000.16386 (vista_.rtm.061101-2205)

but it's not part of vista which is why i'm confused. it was replaced with "windows mail".

i just fired up "windows mail" and it does say version 6.0.6000.16386 (c) 2006. Steve is it possible you're confusing that with Outlook?
