Thinking about driving fast with a video camera...look at this!

This is fresh off Yahoo news about an exotic car dealer in Alberta, Canada. Sure makes you think about what you put on camera and then circulate on the net....

CALGARY (CBC) - Alberta RCMP have arrested four people for allegedly driving Ferraris and Lamborghinis at speeds in excess of 300 km/h, one of whom is featured in a video circulating on the internet showing luxury cars hurtling down the province's highways.

Four exotic sports car drivers were tracked down south of Calgary on Sunday after local residents complained to police about speeding on Highway 23, near High River.

No charges were laid, but RCMP say the investigation is continuing.

One of the people arrested was Zahir Rana, who owns ZR Auto, which specializes in selling Ferrari and Lamborghini cars.

The company produced a video circulating online that features high-end cars hurtling down a rural highway, with a shot of the speedometers showing top speeds in excess of 300 km/h.

In the video, Rana is clocked driving his Lamborghini at 339 km/h.

"I was nervous before the run. And when I was doing the run, at that time, I just wanted to go faster and faster. And I know I could have done 350, but I ran out of road," he says in the video.

"I just wanted to push and not give a damn about what happened."

Rana told CBC News Tuesday that the video was faked.

Alberta RCMP aren't so sure. Sgt. Patrick Webb said he thinks the video could be authentic and an investigation is underway.

"That gets past the point of just a heavy foot and exceeding a highway speed by 10 or 20 kilometres an hour. This is into the area of dangerous driving and endangers everybody."

Keith Morison, a spokesman for the Calgary Sports Car Club, said it's irresponsible to drive that fast on an open highway, where trucks could appear from a side road or an animal can dash onto the road.

In the Calgary area alone there are more than 40 organized racing events each year, so there is no need to use the highway, he said.

Webb said street racing has long had a presence in Alberta, but what makes this situation unique is the exotic nature of the cars, which he said is tied to Albertans' increasing wealth.

Where I am confused is that it said four people were arrested...then it says no charges were laid. So what the heck were they arrested for, if in fact they ever were?

If they can afford Lambos and Ferraris then I am sure they can afford the bail and pay whatever fine they levy. They will probably do it again.

Arrests are made on "probable cause" and made by the police.

Charges are filed on "beyond a reasonable doubt" and is furthered by the district/city attorney

Criminal jury's are to convict on "beyond a shadow of a doubt", as opposed to a civil charge where it is made on "preponderance of the evidence".

So the cops have made a lawful arrest and are gathering their evidence to present to the DA/CA a solid case.

So yes: they have been arrested, but no charges filed....this is exactly how the justice system works.

Actually, they are being detained. Charges have to be brought up once an arrest is made. Probable cause is used for searches, not to make an arrest. If there's evidence found, and probable cause is justified, then an arrest is made.

Then again this is Canada, not CA(lifornia) so the laws are different.

The law can be pretty confusing, and I just went through an academy.

You may have forgotten that they draw and quarter street racers in Canada- threaten to crush their cars ect...

Ever see an Enzo pancake?

Here is some of the "evidence". Morons...

Heh, cute video. These guys obviously have more money than brains....which is much better than the reverse.

I think the arrest is all the police are going to get. Just as a warning to make sure nobody else pulls the same stunt.

Somebody needs to certify the video as genuine in court and that is just not going to happen....

Anonymous video and testimony doesn't fly in court (at least prior to GW Bush). Good enough for an arrest, but that is about it.

If this is the evidence video...it starts off saying "Blocked off private roadway" Was that not truely the case?

Who knows... I am willing to bet "private roadway" meant 4am on a rural road with lookouts, and 2-way radios- NOT "We consulted the local constabulary, obtained permits, and insurances to conduct a highspeed driving event"

Happened just down the road from me.

They've been detained and the Mounties are investigating. They've all been released.

The road was not closed. No permits were attained.

Nothing will come of it. Justice in Canada is pretty lax.

The "we crush your cars for street-racing" in Ontario is not yet law, simply a bill that will not pass. They've said that they can sieze and crush if they thing you might even try street racing, and that's simply unconstitutional. They can't crush your car without charging you with a crime.

Did he say, "Ashphalt?

Good points all, but a jury is to convict "beyond a reasonable doubt".

While I do not want my words to be twisted and say that I condone what they did, at least they did it on an a practically deserted stretch of road, at an hour when nobody else was using it. I have seen much worse. Quite frankly, I have seen much more dangerous driving at NSX meets and drives when people who have no real idea how to handle their car are darting in and out of traffic, or taking a 20 mph curve at 55 mph. How many of you have tried to dart through the yellow, almost red...'yep, it is red now and I am still going' traffic light on your way to work, or cut into that almost too small space in crowded highway traffic? If you say you have never done that you are either lying, or being blind to your own mistakes and indiscretions. In this video it is pretty apparent that if they screwed up and wrecked, only they would suffer the consequences of probably death or injury. I would like for some of you in the glass houses to consider this before comment.

you know what? i fear for my life less from these people than i do some of the idiots that drive the speed limit on the road.

fact of the matter is, speeders pay a lot more attention to the road. yeah, it would suck if you get clipped by a car doing 200mph, but i'd rather die saying "i got hit by a lambdoing 200" than i got hit by a friggen huge SUV with some stupid spoiled b**** on her cell phone/doing her makeup/doing anything other than LOOKING AT WHERE SHE'S GOING..... arrest them!

what really pisses me off here "down south" is that you'll get pulled for doing 10 over and NOBODY even knows the rules of the road. for instance, nobody EVER signals when turning or stays to the RIGHT lane (even when you flash your high beams, honk horn, etc.; also the reason why ATL has 1/4 the population of NYC, 2-3 times the amount of road, but STILL manages to have "traffic"- mind you, there are hundreds of feet between cars, but nobody knows how to change lanes or fill the spaces, so you get standstill traffic, when there is nothing causing the traffic other than idiots)

sorry, i just hate driving down here

+1! It seems to me that the only people at risk were those involved. It's not like they're doing 300km/h past a kindergarten at home-time. I came back to this thread to make the same point you just did so well because after watching the video I couldn't see what the outrage was about.
