Thoughts from a 20+ year NSX Owner to new NSX Owners (and maybe some not so new)

After having left $17K at Mestas in Peyton, CO I'll gladly endorse Paul Z and the best between the Mississippi and the Pacific for NSX work.

However, also after having left $17K at Mestas I want to shout that there is a 6th way of killing an NSX left out of the YouTube video: The plastic radiator header tanks on the oem radiator are subject to catastrophic failure (read $17K). As informed as I thought I was, I was unaware of this weak link -- and with a rear engine you can't see the disaster unfolding -- especially when you’re driving like a hooligan and looking out for cops. Alloy engines rapidly succumb to overheating and destroy themselves.

In short: At timing belt time, change the radiator -- preferably to an all alloy one and you can save buckets of $$$.
 
@makrotzki - I had the plastic tank on my 91 Civic Si radiator crack and fail so this phenomenon is not unique to an NSX...I found I smelled the coolant smell from the leak. Luckily for me, it was a small crack and wasn't a catastrophic failure. On my NSX, I did a KOYORad (all aluminum) radiator when I did my last TB/WP and all the coolant hoses in 2017...and the KOYORad radiator is actually cheaper than the Showa OEM radiator with the plastic tubs...DSC00426.jpg

I suspect the first radiator was damaged in shipping, although no damage to the carton was evident.

I'd suggest one more vendor: Chintrackdays.com. You probably know Wei Shen Chin started Chin Track Days as a hobbyist outlet for him and his friends to explore and enjoy the first gen NSXs as they were designed to be driven, on race tracks. The company started out with its principals all being NSX owners, and most continue to own NSXs. Mark and Maria Hicks (who curated the black "Chinnsx" and their own silver, and share the Valencia Red NC, the latest "Chinnsx"), Vince Howard (his gorgeous Zanardi!, and sharing the NC), and of course Wei Shen himself, still rocking his '92 and the 2017 car. (I'm sure I'm forgetting Important People of Chin's history that owned NSXs; apologies.)

No one does track days better than Chin Track Days does them, from quality of instructors, to variety of venues, to format and crispness of how they execute a track day, to safety record, to the awesomeness of the cars they attract (you never know what famous racer you'll see in the Advanced Group; I've been passed by a Dyson Racing IMSA prototype on Sebring's back straight, which started out as a speck in the mirror then WHOOOSH! it was past at probably a buck-ninety!), Jack Baldwin, Porsche GT Cup cars, Ferrari Challenge cars, and others I'm sure I simply can't remember. The paddock is like a moveable car show for sportscar enthusiasts. NSXPO track events are usually conducted by Chin Track Days, and if you've been, you know.

Sorry if you mentioned it in your post, but I didn't see it. They are full-goose NSX enthusiasts and deserve a listing in your wonderfully comprehensive resource post.
 
How do I get a hold of Jay Bozeman?

(with some really interesting stuff for the NSX (especially if your defroster panel (between the dash and windshield) has the typical cracks by the sunlight sensor right in the center of the trim piece....his solution covers it up and doesn't require dash removal like replacing that plastic defroster panel does...)

I'd love to see what solution he has come up with for this.

Good thread. My first NSX (93’) should be delivered next week. I’ll be building my maintenance and parts list after baselining the car. Wouldn’t have thought about the coil guard.

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. On top of the NSXPrime site migration, I've been doing the "sell a house" and "find and buy a new house" and "move from house to house" game...then NSXPO was on top of us!!

I would try messaging him on Facebook in either NSXPrime FB page or NSX OWNERS GROUP...he is in both groups.
Hopefully this message has already been "overcome by events" (and is, thus, moot) as you have been able to find him.
 
Cris wylan at fisher Acura is the Nsx guru near boulder Colorado everything from basic maintenance to total custom all work done thru the dealership
 
Hilltop Auto should be on the list of recommended shops. Don the owner was a factory-trained NSX tech and he's been maintaining LOTS of Bay Area NA1/NA2 NSXs for years.

I've never lived closer than 50 miles from the shop, but I've been making the drive there -- past three or four Acura dealerships and probably a dozen other independent Honda/Acura specialists -- every time my car's needed service since 2005.
