Just finished changing my timing belt, and amazingly enough, it's running fine. Found out during the process that the previous owner must have been an absolute wanker- there are missing fasteners, brackets that weren't connected the way they should have been, and some fasteners that were cross threaded, so that they snapped when I tried to take them off (or got so stressed that when I tried to put them on the right way, they snapped).
I feel richer for the experience, and think I understand the car better, but if I had it to do over again I think I would probably just take it to Zahntech.
