Tint Rear Large Window or only inner rear window?

I was just thinking this over the other day...

I know some people like to view the engine through the back window so you guys leave it un-tinted?

Do you tint the inner rear window in that case? Does it affect visibility?

My rear window is tinted but I kinda like that black look. Also if you remove that OEM engine cover, you obviously lose the ability to store the hardtop but does the engine spray/leak oil onto the rear window if left exposed?

Yes, it does. Road grime.

When i bought my car it had just the little window tinted and i didnt like the looks of it or the visability. Now i have just the hatch tinted and it not only looks much better but i can see out of it better too.

Also, unless you had an SC or something why would anyone want to show off a na v6? Most F cars that have the engine view are showing off V12 monsters.

The only F car V12 in the back being shown off through the hatch is the Enzo.

The F430 is a V8 (NA)

The F360 is a V8 (NA). So the NSX (V6; NA) seems fine to show off.

All the points you guys made are good ones!

I think I will leave it with the stock engine cover on and windows tinted as it sits right now.

You're right, not much to show for a stock NA 6 cylinder so will just keep the nice window tinted....

I think the clear bonnet is more to show off that there is a engine there. I dont know how many times people who asked to see the engine go straight to the front of the car. My friend Roger likes to play games by telling them there is no engine and then proves this by opening the front and trunk to show them just that.

Hi

I have the rear large window tinted. I think it looks good. I am thinking of having the side window tinted too. But I am not sure if I will do that.

I changed the tail lights the other day as they where old and cracked. I had Bluebat's tinting on one of them and I found out I did not like it so I took it off again.

I am not sure if I tint the side windows it will feel like I am pimping the car. The tinting of the rear lights had me feel like I was pimping it and I did not want that.

Regards

I have my cabin window clear, the large back window tinted and most of the time drive with the cover on. I like the sound deadening of the cover so the engine noise doesn't protrude into the cabin so I can carry on a conversation with the passenger if needed.
If I don't have anyone, then I'll probably remove the cover just so I can see the few shiney engine pieces I have.

I don't think it's a v6 vs v8 vs v12 thing about showing off the engine bay, I think it's more of a designed for that purpose thing. The closest analogy I can make coming from architecture is ductwork --there is the messy rectangular sheet metal ducting that comes with fiberglass insulation strapped to it, and it's not made to be seen. On the other hand, there are ducts (usually round, metal, finished pieces with the insulation on the inside) that are meant for exposed applications and generally look much better. Usually there is additional cost in making functional things look presentable because they have to pull double duty. Painted steel (intumescent) for fireproofing is another example, it's insanely expensive but allows the aesthetics of the steel to be showcased (check out mies van der rohe).

I think the 360 was the first ferrari that really had the idea of the engine as a showpiece and thus it was designed for view. This is a preference, but I think the longitudinal placement looks much better for a viewing application, and the nsx's bay definitely looks more "functional" (i think the coolant bottle really does it in). That's not to say the engine bay can't look good with some work though, I really really like Jeff's Baker's engine bay (Houston), and he doesn't have FI. Worth a look if you're into it... I'm thinking about it but I also have a targa so it's kind of pointless.

Same here (the tint). But I do have shiny bits that I enjoy seeing through the mesh engine cover. I also enjoyed the fact that I could see my radiator hose explode and shower the rear hatch glass with coolant through the mesh engine cover. Without it (the mesh cover) I may not have noticed until it was too late.

LMAO....
I was driving mine one night without the cover and was able to watch OIL get sprayed all over the inside of my back window.

Revisiting this topic: Main reason is I've got BRIDE RED sport seats in the car now and want it viewable from the rear window.

My car has dark tint on the large rear window right now (but no tint on the smaller rear one)

Thinking how the car would look with just tint on the side windows but not the rea large dome.....?

Can someone post pics of their untinted rear window from a direct rear view?

What do you guys think?

Sometimes when I see that kind of car, (where only sides are tinted) IMO the look is horrible. Im going to tint my nsx sides & bigger rear window at least. Maybe also smaller one.

I have both the inner glass and outer hatch tinted. At night all u can see is headlights but thats because i have limo on both:biggrin: During the day its fine.

But i agree, just tinting the sides is ugly, have to at least tint the hatch along with the windows.

Rick - go for a light tint all around and it would look stunning on your car. My former NSX had this done without the inner engine area window tinted and it was perfect.

Which Brides are you going with as I have my brand new Brix II's for sale...

Thanks for chiming in....

Yea I agree a car like the NSX NEEDS TINT - my only reason for asking is because I saw another forum member's white nsx and he has NO TINT.

Makes it really easy to see his red seats poking out from both the side and rear window (from behind). I was thinking since the NSX large rear window won't allow much sunlight into the car since we have another smaller glass window before it hits our driver's comparment.....

I'll have to look at his car a bit more to decide.

Don't know if this will help. I've had my engine cover off for the past 1 1/2 year. I painted the coolant expansion tank black and got the NSX-R intake manifold cover & plate. I love how it looks so my vote is no on tinting the large window.

I cant believe i never thought of painting the coolant bottle. That looks good for being such a simple an inexpensive mod.

That looks pretty good. Do you have any more pics of it from different angles and/or further back?

While driving or when the engine gets hot, don't you afraid your rear window might break?

I thought of removing the engine cover too but afraid the rear window might break due to hot heat exposure. It sures look good on your.

I will see if I have more pictures when I get home later today. If not, I will take some.

Honestly, I am not too concerned about the rear glass cracking due to heat. I don't think I have ever read that as a cause for the rear glass to crack. However, I am slightly concerned about the plastics/rubbers taking a beating from UV rays so I use Zaino Z-16 in the engine bay.

I'm looking for a picture looking straight through the rear untinted window into the passenger compartment....if you have aftermarket seats that's a plus since I want to see exactly how much of the rear seat tops are poking out.

I figured on a white car, red would stand out :)
