I'm planning on buying a bed, washer/dryer, and a refrigerator all at the same time, from a major dept. store. The salespeople told me that the items can be delievered all at once (including the washer/dryer hookup). My question is do I tip the delievery people, and if so, for how much ? (There's stairs involved)

I'm assuming it will probably be 2 guys, so your 50-100 is meant to be split between the two ?

thats just me.
what i tip seems to be generous for me atleast, which means im really happy nothing had been damaged.
especially furniture thats valued in the thousands im guessing, 50-100 for tip is worth it.
it'll pay for a nice evening dinner with the GF or wife, or both

i can rant about my own horrors stories and experiences, but i won't.
just let them know in advance to be careful and not damage the walls, floors or anything. use carpet sliders if needed. they sell furniture moving kits at costco fairly inexpensive.

I would definitely tip them, more if they do a good job. These guys work hard and carrying appliances up the stairs is not easy. How much depends on you but definitely something.

You must determine whether your tip will be for a job well done or as insurance that special attention will be payed,,,ie tip before or after the job.I base my tips on the time of the job,the cost of the material, whether I could do it myself, and lastly how important my money is to me at the time.

I usually tip well, roughly on par with the above. I think it's just as important to be friendly to those guys. I always tell them I appreciate what they do, it lets them know I will probably take care of them if they take car of me and I'm sure it makes their job more enjoyable knowing they are valued. I've done jobs like that in the past and it's a lot harder than many jobs that involve answering the phone and sitting behind a computer all day, even though it may not pay as well.

I probably go too far, I'm young and in good shape and usually end up helping them. Especially if it's a tv or something $$$.

3 guys delievered a refrigerator, plus washer/dryer (including hookups). They worked very quickly and were careful w/ my wood floors. 2 younger guys did most of the moving, while an older guy took care of the hookups. They were in and out within 20 minutes. I gave them $60 to split 3 ways...They seemed pleased. Now another issue.....I went to Fridays (restaurant) to buy a $100 gift certificate for a friend. The hostess pointed me in the direction of a bartender to handle the transaction. I was told to sit down while the bartender disappeared for a few minutes (I guess he had to find the gift cards somewhere in the back). He returned and I told him that I wanted to pay w/ my debit card. He presented me w/ a bill that included a tip line. Because he provided no food or beverage service, and also because the dollar amount was so large, I didn't see it fit to offer any tip for his service of fetching gift cards.....He kind of gave me a strange look (but he was still very friendly) when he saw the bill. I'm like WTF !!! Is he expecting something ? Any thoughts on this ?

no tipy for a gift card.

$15 for each person, for those doing work (thats a good 1hr of extra wages at a decent loaded labor rate for what will amount to about 30 minutes of work). For anyone who sits in the truck and doesn't help $5 (that might motiviate him to help out next time).

If its only the bed going upstairs, then no extra tip. If the washer and dryer needs to go upstairs, then you might add another $10-$15 to be split between those who are working.

And give them each a 32oz. bottle of Gatorade. I always do that.

Now, if ANYTHING is not done to your satisfaction w/ the DELIVERY itself, then no cash tip. Just give them the Gatorade.

I would have offered them a drink, but I didn't have anything cold ( they had my new fridge ).

Be prepared. I have Horror...just horror stories about furniture/appliance delivery people. Marks on the walls, mud on the tile/carpet dings on the appliances. Ugh. My blood pressure is rising just thinking about it.

I can guarantee you that were that the case, the retail establishment would be taking care of any/all damage. I would not tolerate that for a second.
I always tip for good service and always offer something to drink too. I also would not tip for a gift card purchase.

When do I get to come check out your new goodies?

You wanna check out a fridge?

"So here's the veggy dry drawer, it's got a cool lile lever here...oh and over here is the section for eggs, pretty cool right??"

Or is this more like it :-P:

"Oh hey a 40oz...*yoink*"

As long as there's cold beer involved anything is interesting. That has to be one of the fundamental laws of physics.
