Tire size HELP please

I have an '01 and am upgrading the wheels to 17" in front and 18" in back. I've been getting conflicting advice. I was originally going to go with 215/45/17 and 275/35/18. I was told a 265/35 would throw the heights off and the 275 is .96" taller than the fronts. But now I'm concerned that the contact areas are off and the slip angle will get screwy. So now I'm thinking of going with 215/40/17 and 265/35/18's (255's are not made in the tire I'm considering). But with this set up, I'm concerned the tire diameters are not compatible and how it will affect the TCS. Any help and comments would be appreciated on any combinations.

I have been running those sizes and I've never had a problem with the TCS engaging unless the roads are slippery.

Those tire sizes will be just fine.

Outer diameter of the front size is 0.65 percent larger than stock, and of the rear is 2.37 percent larger than stock. That keeps the front-to-rear ratio under 2 percent of stock.

Enjoy!

I've been reading your posts and other threads on the TCS and tire sizes. Thanks. Any comments or suggestions on the 215/45/17 and 275/35/18 setup? Would this creat a potential understeer problem? Apparantly Comptech uses 215/40/17 and 275/35/18's but I'm assuming they disregard the TCS ... but I'm not sure of that.

I wouldn't. Both sizes are larger than stock (4.2 percent and 3.5 percent). Although TCS should work, you risk front rubbing, and it will hurt gearing (like using taller gears). I would stick with the 215/40-17 and 265/35-18.

Regarding your understeer question: You can't tell that by knowing only the sizes. That depends very much on the tires grip level. Simple rule: Grippier tires overall reduce understeer (sounds a bit weired but at least the grip level of the front tires counts).

Example: With Michelin Pilot (harder compound) you will have more understeer than with stock Yokos or Bridgestones (softer compound) assuming both combos would have the same size.

Thanks

Thanks everyone. I've called around some more too and I've decided to go with the 215/40/17 and 265/35/18. Comptech also believes the 215/45/17 has some rubbing potential depending on the tire, but they do like the 275/35/18's ... but I'm going to go with the 265's.
