Tracking and speedbleeders

Ok.. so i'm busy tech-ing my car again for another track day this weekend and I noticed something.. my brake fluid was lower than when I left for the track last thursday... I had a 3 day event at VIR and all was good...

Curious as to why the fluid was lower I check all the hoses, lines, etc. etc....
nothing..

Then I remembered.. whenever I removed the nipple cover off of the bleeder screws the head of the screw was always wet. (please keep this mature).. :wink:

I'm guessing that the combination of all the hard braking, 3 day event, and stuff caused it to leak some.. and yes.. i torque them all.

I remember earlier though Andrie not being very fond of these screws... just tossing it up but.. anyone else encounter anything like this?

mine endued 7 track days and everyday driving for more than a year, last time I check they had not fluid loss nor the nipples getting wet...

Like all things, it could fail, maybe buy another one and see if it will fix it? Good thing it's not that expensive.
 
I think that it is normal when you track a car and wear down the brake pads. The caliper pistons are extended more to maintain contact with the thinner pads so the brake fluid leaves the reservoir to fill the lines since the resting position of the pistons has changed. Especially after a three day event you will notice it.

It happened all the time on my 944 TurboS and now on my NSX.

In some cars there is a sensor for the amount of brake fluid in the reservoir which is used to activate a warning light to indicate that the brake pads need to be replaced when the fluid is low. It's an indirect indicator of brake pad wear.

Good point.. didn't think of that.. I did change my braking points and increased my speed...

Are you going to the PCA event in May?

I am in the process of moving up your way to Williamsburg and don't know if I will move before then or in mid-June. I haven't found a place to buy so I may rent and move in May.

How did the new cheapy AutoZone rotors do on the track? Must have been OK.

I was wondering if anyone was going to ask me that.. to be 100% honest... After 3 days of HARD braking.. Grand Course 1 day and Full Course another 2 days...

Not even any stress cracks!! Yes.. no stress cracks... i'm sold on these bad boys.. I'll never buy another rotor again. :biggrin:

Although I have to admit... those were the rears.. it'll be interesting to see the fronts..

Was there any name brand on the rotors? Did the vanes/fins look stock or were they different?

Duralast was the brand... I think it's an Autozone thing...

the vanes and fins when compared to my slotted were EXACTLY the same.. it's like they took these and slotted them..........

Xavier,

I have had my speedbleeders for over a year and have had no issues. I have found that my fluid level varies with pad wear. I think you should make sure you wipe all excess fluid from the bleeder and use a q-tip to clean the rubber caps after you bleed. then after a good workout at the track, check for moistness.

That's a good idea.. think i'll try that when I bleed them before my event this weekend.
