Trunk lid rattling somthing fierce while idling

When my '94 NSX is idling, the trunk lid starts rattling like crazy. Any ideas why it would do that? I just turned over 77,000 miles, and haven't replaced the thingees that hold the trunk up yet. (You can tell I'm 'leet 'cause of the tech talk I use.) Could that be the cause -- do they also contribute to holding it down?

TIA for any advice...

Is it the deck lid or the panel on the spoiler that houses the LED third brake light. I had a rattle at idle that I noticed when standing behind the car.

I tightened the screws in the little access holes on the underside of the spoiler and the rattles are now gone.

See if this is the problem, otherwise you have to asjust the release/locking mechanism.

How do you adjust the release/locking mechanism??

I've got a similar problem with my Toyota. The hatch seems to be rattling due the this mechanism. I don't know the correct terms for the parts, but I think that there is a gap between the latch and the 'hook' part of the lock and this results in my hatch moving up and down. I think this is what is causing the rattle when I'm driving.

If you don't have the little rubber trunk stop thingies, I'd suggest you get them and use Shoe Goo or some other strong rubber adhesive to stick them in place. You don't want valuable aluminum rubbing away, do you?

BTW, if the spoiler is tightly attached, the other culprit would be the trunk lid itself. When I first got my NSX, I noticed that the trunk would not close evenly - It was a little higher on one side than the other. While looking inside the trunk, I noticed something interesting.

As it turns out, the little rubber trunk stoppers inside the trunk actually screw in and out. With the trunk closed, look to see if the trunk is even. Then, push down on one side and then the other to see if either side is not actually seated. If the trunk is not firm on both sides, open the trunk and literally unscrew the little cone-shaped rubber piece that goes between the trunk lid and the body when you close it. Once you try it, you should know what to do.

Drop me a line if you have any problems with this. I was surprised not to see such a common problem and simple fix listed in the FAQ.

I think those rubber things might have been the culprit. I twisted them tight and the trunk rattles a lot less now. It still rattles a little, but not nearly as dramatically. Thanks all for the advice!

The rattle may be coming from the junction of the LED brake light spoiler and the deck lid. The OEM install uses thin, double-sided foam tape to mate the two components, which are then secured by nuts on the inside face of the trunk lid.

There is a rattle from the junction of these components when closing the trunk lid on a 91. The 94 has the same problem.

Dissasemble lid from LED spoiler. Install new foam tape on both sides of the spoiler, at three places along the mating surface.

This will stop the spoiler rattle.

NEVERMIND. Took those rubber stoppers out and the two screws on the left side were loose. The thing is though, I took the other stoppers out as well just to check the screws and they were different screws, but were all tight.

^ most rattling NSX trunks I've seen have exactly this problem... loose brakelight screws. Those little plastic screw covers are getting really expensive too, so it is good to check these periodically.

+1.i checked mine a while back after seeing one of these threads, and found most to be loose, although the spoiler wasn't rattling
