If everything goes as planned my 2005 will be here next week. I want to keep the car basically stock but my 95 had headers and a magnaflow muffler that had a nice throaty sound. What is the best sounding exhaust for a 2005 also is there any mild upgrades that give you some good bang for the bucks and dont materially change the car?

1) R stalk, titanium daves's short throw shift kit, R knob, R boot (from SOS and RJP)

2) Smartenna

3) Downforce AIS and uni-filter (for that nice growl)

4) GT-One 5.1, Taitec GTLW (or SOS/Cantrell version of it), GT-Design international's new one. ARMS (if you can find a cheap one). Ark. Any of these are better than stock IMO.

5) Have Acura put in the newest gear oil.

6) LED lamps, change all the yellow lamps ($6)

7) Autovation or SOS pedals. Much better for heel and toe. Looks better. Feels better. Costs $50.

8) Change fuilds to synthetic. Add Redline water wetter to coolant.

9) Higher performance rubber if the factory ones are going. Azenis RT-615, Goodyear GSD, or the new Dunlop Dirreza.

10) Factory type R front sway bar, and R braces.

These should keep you busy for a while.

Excellent list.

The AIS won't produce any real gains but you do get the whoosh sound for ~$300. The UNI filter is good but the OEM filter is very good as well. Keep the stock airbox.

The GT-One exhaust is awesome. 2005 OEM header design is very good and aftermarket headers won't produce the gains they would on a 1991-1996 NSX. I wouldn't worry about replacing them.

I think Bilstein shocks and Dali progressive springs are a great no-comfort-compromise suspension upgrade. Along with the Type-R sway and chassis bars you'll really feel the difference.

The OEM brakes are very good and unless you track the car will serve you just fine. OEM dust very, very little. If you track I'd consider AM pads like Project Mu, Cobalt, Carbotech or Hawk. The OEM rotors are very good. I'd recommend replacing the OEM brake fluid with a high-performance fluid such as ATE or Motul however.

Don't worry about any chips or ECU upgrades.

Have fun with your new NSX!

I have an 05. The only performance upgrades I'd make would be the NSX-R chassis bars. They rock. And a CT supercharger for $10k. You can spend a lot on other things but, at the end of the day, you'll never feel the difference.

Edit... the smartenna is great too for 50 bones.

$140 last I checked at downforce. Its not a known fact that there are NO performance gains. I think there is some... maybe 1-2 HP, but some. I've seen all the threads and all the dyno sheets posted here. I still have not seen inconclusive avidence that there is NO gain. I would go with the 8-9 some claim and I would go with zero. Anyway it is worth it just for the sound when Vtec comes in... it is pure music with that thing.

Well, respectfully, a product shouldn't ever be marketed under the premise that "no one can prove it doesn't work." I have seen no conclusive evidence it does work, meaning not one single non-vendor before/after dyno with only the AIS showing gains, so be it as it may.

I say stick to non-controversial mods that are proven to work like every other one you listed.

NSXGMS, come on now! you can just look at it and it looks like it makes power... Don't be a grinch. It looks smooth, its carbon fiber, and it makes a cool noise. All these things equal more power. Even my 9 year old cousin knows that.

You know what, you've got a point there. I never looked at it from that angle.

I'm proud to be one of the AIS's biggest skeptics (maybe the biggest) and I'm actually not ashamed to admit I have one. But it was given to me. I would never have spent a hard-earned cent on one.

Hey, I think we can all agree we'd rather see the OP's money spent on a Type-R sway bar instead of an AIS. Just trying to maximize his bucks.

$150 set of test pipes (for sound)...then go cut up all your credit cards.

I'd have to disagree about that... sway bars and chassis bars makes a HUGE difference... especially on the T top without sacrificing ride quality. If you want more, you can lower it with huge results.

I've driven an NSX w/ a CTSC and yea its fast but not worth TEN GRAND. I/H/E and suspension mods are enough for most ppl ;)

I put the cantrell ais and comtec headers with the taitec exhaust on my 95 and really feel like I gained some power. I also liked the sound. I think I'll go with ais and exhaust to start. No one seems to think the 05 needs or gets much from headers. My95 really needed them with the bulky maniflold.

What is this piece? A filter? Anyone have a pic of this as I've never heard of this before....hehehe

I picked up a 2004 telling myself this car won't need too many mods but here's my list of must haves:

1) Coilovers to drop the car since OEM ride height is a 4x4 - yuck!~

2) GT one or other aftermarket exhaust for a nice rumble

3) Smaller aftermarket steering wheel since the oem one looks old

4) CLEAR BRA if your car is in mint condition

5) Tint

6) Antenna turn-off switch

These mods here are more optional but certainly will improve the look:

1) 19"/18" aftermarket rims combo
2) Brembo BBK's
3) Bride/Recaro Race Seats
4) NSX-R shift knob, shift boot, mats

rk

Totally agree.

Totally disagree. Staying on the ASS of that 997 Turbo at Watkins Glen on the back straight was priceless.

Downforce makes the same AIS that cantrell made for $140 instead of $300. Frankly there is no reason why that small simple piece should cost $300.
