What a finish! I was thoroughly impressed by those guys today... even by the normal standards by which PGA pros should be measured. Tomorrow should be interesting. Tiger probably has 1000cc's of cortisone waiting for him in a syringe at his hotel tonight. I will root for Tiger tomorrow, but you gotta love Rocco!

Though he ended up 3rd, Lee Westwood's performance was downright gutsy as well. Most people, pros included, would have completely fallen apart after he hit into the front lip of the right-side fairway bunker and then had to take a relief drop from the grandstands. I would have carded a 10 and cried for the rest of the round. He walks away with a bogey and fights back to give himself a shot at tying for the lead on 18. Solid work

How does that putt fall???? It looked like it went past the hole and then decided to come back a little bit for him.
Only Tiger.........

In those moments, all I can think about is the cadre of Nike execs jumping up and down in glee as they watch the slow motion/zoomed in replays of the nike swoosh rolling in.

If I hit that put... the ball definitely lips out and rolls 15 feet further.

Tiger is unbelievable! not human. we are watching greatness!

Tough course and I'm very disappointed that there's a delay until tomorrow for the playoff - what gives? Greed over commmercial air time being more expensive on the weekday? At a loss here.

It has nothing to do with greed or any economic factors at all. It's the current policy of the USGA to contest any playoff at the Men's U.S. Open over 18-holes, as opposed to sudden death extra holes (Master's) or an aggregate score covering 3-holes (PGA Championship) or 4-holes (Open Championship - ie. British Open). It's part of the uniqueness of golf that the majors are conducted by varying governing bodies in conjunction with the PGA Tour (Masters - Augusta National, U.S. Open - United States Golf Association, Open Championship - Royal & Ancient, PGA Championship - PGA of America). With all of the varied associations involved there is no standard.

Obviously in regards to the U.S. Open there will never be enough time to finish 18-holes the same day as the final round, hence waiting until Monday. Even the other formats potentially run into the same problem with darkness depending on the circumstances. I think clearly the networks & PGA Tour would much rather finish the event on Sunday to draw higher ratings as not that many people can watch a Monday finish during the day due to work. Perhaps at some point the USGA will change since they have eliminated the 18-hole playoff already for the Women's U.S. Open.

Re: Couldn't write a better script

Here's a summary worth reading even if you saw the whole thing. A tidbit:

1:33 p.m.: Tiger’s wearing red, is unbeaten in majors with a 54-hole lead, is experiencing his first Father’s Day and is at Torrey Pines. He pulls his tee shot left. He’s just playing possum.

1:37 p.m.: Tiger kicks his golf bag in anger and GOES DOWN IN AGONY! TIGER’S HURT! THE KNEE HAS GIVEN IN! Oh, wait. He kicked it with his right leg. Never mind.

1:40 p.m.: Tiger’s second shot hits a tree and bangs left. Terrible. Who does this guy think he is, Phil Mickelson? .......

1:43 p.m.: Tiger’s third from the rough hits another tree and doesn’t go more than 20 yards. Who does this guy think he is, John Daly?

Pulling for Rocco; old guys rule !!!

Who's watching this???

Amazing golf being played. For those that don't have a tv on right now... Tiger just tied it up on the final hole... again. On to sudden death they go.

Like Tiger's Father told him, "you'll never face anyone mentally tougher than you are".
I think it's true. Roco choked in the clutch, Tiger didn't, game over.

Re: A new challenge?

I'm trying not to fall into the Tiger-hype hole, but it is damn hard since his remarkable domination reached a new level this weekend.

It almost begs the question, "how would he do in a different sport?" Could he excel there as well? Mikey Jordan tried and failed, so there's a brass ring that no one's grabbed and Tiger seems to be the only one who could.

I wonder what he could do in a Formula Atlantic?

This victory was amazing because of his knee and some of the heroics he pulled. But for utter domination, you need to look back at his 2000 victory in the US Open where he won by 15 strokes. No one else could even break par that tournament, Tiger shot a 12 under 272 for the tournament and 2nd place was +3. That was one of the all time greatest sports achievements in my book.

The funny thing about Tiger is that he can have bad days and yet still pull off amazing things when it matters (i.e. the two eagles on the back nine on Saturday). Everyone else can have their best match ever and yet Tiger can still find a way to beat them. How can anyone possibly have the mental fortitude to not let Tiger get to them?

In a final round that Tiger leads?

In a playoff?

And the legend grows with each subsequent win.

Crazy.

+1...
i dont think he dominated....he won, but not by much........

He knows how to WIN, the rest of the field is reaching to win!
On a bad wheel the guy can still deliver; He is the best right now and maybe ever, time will tell

I've been a fan of professional golf for as long as I can remember. Maybe it's because I lived near Agusta National when I was a kid, but I don't remember it. Anyway, I think that where most pro's are motivated by winning a single tournament, Tiger is motivated by holding every record in the book. It looks like he's close to doing it and nothing is going to stop him. Breaking records is much more difficult than winning a US Open, but you have to win the US Open and the other Majors to break the records. So where does it end for him? I also liked it when he said during an interview "second place is the first loser."

I was at the open on Friday right behind the tee on 15th par 4...his presence alone made everybody just watch in awe...I've seen many sports figures close (kobe, Jordan, etc...) but there something about tiger's "force" that the crowd feels....I think he's worth every penny of the 120+Million he makes annually.

But he did it with this:

"Tiger Woods will miss the remainder of 2008 after a planned reconstructive surgery on his left knee, the golfer's management company said Wednesday, confirming rumors that Woods was significantly more injured than he let on while winning the 108th U.S. Open.

IMG released a statement saying the world No. 1 played at Torrey Pines with a torn anterior cruciate ligament and a double stress fracture of the left tibia

This guy is worth the hype! As his Dad taught him "no one will be stronger mentally then you". No $hit, he plays 91 holes at the US Open under par with a torn ACL and two stress fractures. The golf TV ratings for the rest of 2008 took a huge hit today, he is the PGA Tour IMO.
