I just ordered a new SPEC stage 2 clutch for my 91. I need to know if it is compatible with the stock flywheel or any other aftermarket ones.

The rep from SPEC says I need to use the 97+ flywheel with this clutch. Anyone using this clutch have this issue? I plan on replacing my flywheel anyways so any suggestions on which one to get?

I don’t know about the nsx but I had a problem with the spec clutch/flywheel combo that I installed in my Audi TT. I ordered there light weight flywheel that they claimed would make the car more rev-happy on turn all it did was kill gas milage made the car idle ruff and actually felt slower in acceleration, when idling it sounded like a diesel truck or a rod knock. After the install of the clutch. I called spec directly they insured me that the flywheel needs to be broken in and that the shudder and nasty vibration will go away after I put about 700 miles in the clutch. So I drove the car for a few days straight and the shudder or vibration did not change. Spec would do nothing about the problem or even admit that there was a problem the only option I had was to go with a stock flywheel so back to the shop the car went. A small fortune later my car is back together. For this reason I will never buy a spec product again. Good luck and choose wisely

Moral of the story: u get what u pay for.

How can a flywheel be broken in? It's a big hunk of metal....

Flywheels don't typically break-in but the clutch disk does. It may take a few hundred miles of to "seat" the disk properly. The friction material on the disk, depending on the manufacture and type, is not dead flat and can require some break-in time before it begins to feel "right".

As I understand, the clutch kit SPEC sells now is only for 1997+ as the discs they use are unsprung. The factory 1997+ flywheel is very expensive due to it's dual mass construction, so may want to look into this first.

take care,
