what is the soft black stuff (sticky when hot) called? used to seal a tail lense, etc

RTV silicone sealant? It’s available at any auto parts store. By the way, I would use clear rather than black when working with the lens... it makes my mistakes less noticable.

i don't think so, this stuff comes in a like a roll, it is more like putty i guess, you can roll it shape it, it streches when u pull it apart, get really sticky if you heat it up. I got this with a maxima rear lamp unit a few years ago and have finally ran out.... it has like a million and one uses on a car.
