Cable isn't an option since the house isn't serviceable for it.

I don't watch sports, so that's not important to me.

We'll have about 4-5 TV's, so one of those whole house DRV's sound nice.

What's the pro's and con's of each?

Thanks,
Eric

Your avatar (changed recently) has been my TV! I'm trying to lose my winter coat, build muscle-mass and lose weight.
I'm with Dish now for over ten years. Never tried Direct TV.

I had Directv for about 8 years, and they pissed me off so bad with hockey games, I dropped them went back to cable (thats saying a lot, because I despise the cable company here). I never had a problem with Directv until that point. Their customer service was always very helpful (and American). However on this, they didnt want to help at all... that is until literally about 10 minutes after the cable guy left, and I literally just removed the sat dish and threw it off the roof, then Directv calls and asks what they need to do to keep my business. Told them they were a little late on that and hung up.

I really like directv. The service has been very good and we rarely lose signal. It has to be a pretty bad storm. The one thing I hate is when you lose power the receiver takes 10 minutes to reboot. I'm thinking of getting a battery back up to fix this issue.

Let me know if you go directv and we can save each other a hundred bucks with the referral program.

I've had Dish for 12 or 13 years and I've been very happy with them  A cool, though little advertised, feature of Dish is that most of their receivers can be upgraded to a fully-featured DVR for a one time $40 fee and an external hard drive.

I get our TV feed from an antenna in the garage attic, you might be surprised how many solid digital channels you can pick up in your area.....for free!

Quite simple IMO.

If you MUST have NFL Sunday Ticket, your only option is DirectTV.

Otherwise, Dish Network is the only way to go. The Hopper System is impressive.

We had Dish for a few years but I was very unhappy with their sports tier. Awful unless you want to watch tumbling championships. Switched to DTV for a few years and running now. Really for the NFL Ticket but other than that, its really a crap shoot at least in my area. Price wise they really aren't THAT different from each other.

I had direcTV for 10 years when i lived in St.Louis and brownfield, TX and liked everything about them but the dish on the house. Years ago the music selection was very nice but i switched to a Sonos home setup and i like it a lot. I have uverse now 3 TV's in the house and all i like about Uverse is the DVR. What i am really pissed about is as much as i pay for uverse, the radio shack hi def antenna has a much better signal than uverse does for loacal channels!! I had no complaints with Directv unless a tree was in the way during a summer storm!!!

From what I've read, satellite and cable compress their HD, OTA (over the air, or the Radioshack antenna) is not compressed. So OTA will always have a better picture for the local channels. iirc

Dish is what I've had for the last 15 years or so, and i had Directv for about 5 years as well. Directv has the edge on sports with NFL but Dish has very good equipment and a solid value. A downside of both compared to cable is one needs a box for each TV, and each box adds $5-7 a month, although there are some ways to mirror the display to other TVs. Both have offers to join, and require 2 year contracts to get the install and equipment free.

How much do youguys pay per month?
I get flyers in the mail saying how cheap it is, but I never believe them.
I think I pay around $120/mo for FIOS internet and TV(just basic HD package with 2 DVRs).

Ha! I've been trying to cut down too. I "bulked up" for about 10 years and have finally had enough of my gut. I got to 320lbs and I'm down to 275lbs now. It's difficult to cut the weight without losing muscle.
