Which Pyrometer?

I am thinking about getting a pyrometer. Not sure if I want the kind with the probe, or the no-touch style.

I can see benefits of each:
- From what I understand the style with the probe allows getting temp just below the surface, which is a better indicator of temperature than right at the surface.
- No-touch style is easier to use and can be used to check brake rotor and component temps

I am interested in using the pyrometer mostly for tire temperatures to tune the suspension, but also use it to check tire temperatures on a travel trailer when I am towing it.

I would like to keep this in the $100-150 range, and I don't need fancy features like memory, averaging, etc., just something to tell me temps.

Thanks!

I've always read that the probe type is vastly more accurate because it avoids the surface cooling. That makes sense to me. Plus, you can get an infrared type for $17 to see how it correlates with the probe, and to check nontire temps.

longacre probe has brake and tire setting.9 v battery lasts forever

This is the one I use, very large numbers in the display makes it easy to read, this basic unit works well for me. They have a better unit that stores the last three readings for each tire so you do not have to write it down, if you plan on doing a lot of tire testing then maybe that unit would be better. For me once I dialed in my allignment, know my tire pressures and tire wear I very rarely get it out to test anymore. If you change tire brands a lot then you would use it more.

Listen to what ^ these guys say - buy the probe type, I'm getting ready to buy that one myself.

Nick, you can use mine if you need to dial things in. Like I said I very rarely use mine since I an not making many changes anymore. Just get it back to me when your done. There are still a few spots left for Autobahn on Monday if you want to go.

Thanks Dave, I will take you up on that, BUT....I still need to: Order rotors and pads, order rear wing, pick up 92 sway bars from Joe, order oem sway bar hardware, and hope that the "fuel cut" issue that happened to me at Autobahn T2-T3 does not happen again! I'm going to do a search on here and see what I find...might do a post and see what responses I get. Sorry for the thread hijack!
