My home PC which was an ancient Gateway from 2000 just crashed. The it doesn't recognize an OS and hard drive so I thought I should get a new one since I can't find the start up disks. We don't use the home PC for anything but iTunes, our digital camera, and browsing the internet with an occassional need for Word. I don't need anything blazing as my old PC was prob pentium II and 256k ram. I would think that 512k ram would be just fine.

Who has some smokin deals on PC packages either just the tower by itself or tower with LCD screen? (don't need a printer) I see places like Circuit City or Best Buy that have a 512k Celeron processor with 120G hard drive for under $300. Is there anything that these basic models leave out that I will need for the basic stuff?

ibuypower.com has some pretty nice stuff. I do a lot of gaming so I have an Alienware machine. Excellent computer, crappy service.

well you can get some insane deals on www.gotapex.com

i got my $1700 dell laptop from dell for $850 after a crazy coupon code

Do not buy from the retail box stores, (best buy, Compusa, etc.) If you really want to get a deal beyond Newegg, etc. Go to where the super geeks buy thier stuff. Roosster.

Type in something like Home PC or computer in the search box and you will see the links to the very best the web has to offer!

You have two avenues:

1) Build your own: cheaper, better value per dollar, more work, usually limited warrenties.

2) Buy from a vendor like Dell: pay slightly more, good 1-3yr warrenty, better looking cases (if you want a really nice looking PC that looks like a nice piece of furniture)

Too lazy and too much of a techy moron to build my own. I ended up getting something from Best Buy as it was the best package deal I could find.

Circuit city actually has a 4th of July special for a decent start up computer. For $379 you get:

Compaq
200 Gig hard drive
AMD Athlon 64 3500+ Processor
1 Gig RAM Memory
standard monitor or $80 upgrade for 15" HP LCD flat screen

Problem is that there was about $250 in rebates that you had to mess with. The Best Buy computer was about $30 more, but you got a printer with it (very crappy Canon one though) and all the discounts were up front, so I did that. It has a little less RAM (512K), but for what I use it for it was just fine.

I couldn't find any PC packages that were close to that anywhere else. Thanks for your help.
