Why I'll Never Sell My NSX

It's been quite awhile since I posted, but thought I'd share some observations that might be of interest to the group. I have an 01 Coupe that replaced an 00 Targa. I bought both cars new; when the I bought the Coupe, I traded the T for it. I have, from the beginning, been a huge NSX fan. However, I have other automotive interests, and over the course of the past two years, I found I was driving my NSX less and less. About a month ago, I decided that I would put it up for sale. I didn't feel good about it, but I was so busy with work and other projects that I didn't have time to really think it through. Thank heaven that it didn't sell, probably because I was so poor at returning email inquiries.

I have been interested in the new Ford GT, and in the new Z06 Corvette. I thought maybe I would spend the proceeds from my NSX sale toward one of these two cars. I noticed that both would be on display at the Chicago auto show last week, so I hopped a last minute flight from Phoenix to Chicago with a same-day turn around (I have an understanding Wife) and spent the afternoon at the show.

After several hours of drooling over the iron there, I had one of those rare moments of mental clarity: even though the new models were exciting, it became very apparant to me that there wasn't a car in the show that I would give up my NSX for, especially for the paltry $53,000 or so that I would obtain through its sale. In fact, I decided, if I did not presently own my Coupe, I would right now be shopping for one exactly like it.

Yes, I know that we NSXers may be a bit down on power -- who cares? My car feels plenty quick, and its about the balance, the engineering, and the usable, workaday dynamics of the car. I have another car, which I dearly love. It weighs in at around 2100 pounds and dynoed at 600 hp. (Its a Kirkham Aluminum Cobra). Sure its fun to roast the tires, but for diceing through freeway traffic or on a tight canyon road, I would pick the NSX.

The point of my long winded post is this: There has never been a car like the NSX. There will never be another car quite like it, especially in light of Honda's apparant decision to cancel or delay indefintely a replacement NSX. Someday, the masses will come to their senses. Until then, if you have an NSX, keep it. If you don't, better buy while the price is right.

I agree with you that the NSX is a fantastic automobile. Like you, I have owned two of them, including my present red/black targa. However, I have seriously been considering selling my current NSX for a Ferrari 355 or perhaps a 360. It is not that I am displeased with a NSX, or the "lack of power" or the low operating cost, maintenance, et al.. I've loved having both of these cars. They have been great.

I'll no doubt get flamed for this, but I would just like to have a Ferrari for a while. I spoke with a service manager at a local Ferrari dealership and he told me that I should expect to spend around $5,000 every two years for maintenance. I know that's nuts versus my $800 for my 35,000 mile at the Acura dealership.

It's just a matter of having a Ferrari experience. I don't know if I'll go for it or not. If I do, perhaps I'll come back to a NSX.

Never sell my NSX...I don't think so. But I'am glad you've had such a good experience with yours.

i agree!!! I will for sure keep my NSX for a good few years to come... nothing like it, best said. I have far too much money and time into my car and i have yet to own it a year yet.... do you miss having a targa? Or do you truly enjoy the coupe more? I know one thing about my car, is the targa. Its nice to be able to go from basically a convertible, to hard top within seconds...

Holy cow, I go away for a few months (okay, a few years) and the next thing I know NSXPO is in my back yard! I will, of course, be there with bells on, as they say. I'm counting the days, and Firebird is a track that will provide lots of fun for the group. I'll also have to quit procrastinating and join NSXCA.

I love the coupe -- its a bit lighter and stiffer, and IMHO, a bit truer to the original design concept. However, nothing can beat a sunny day (or a star filled night) with the top off. I guess that it is a bit of a trade off. The majority seem to like the Targa, and I can't blame them.

As for the Ferrari 355, I too have looked long and hard at the car -- to my eye, it is one of the most beautiful designs I've ever seen. I am considering purchasing one in the next year. However, it will have to join my NSX in the garage. The 360, while more potent than the 355, does not appeal to me. The design looks flacid and a bit eel like. (?) A matter of individual taste, I guess.

Viva the NSX!

Or you could always wait for the F430!

I would say the F430 is the ugliest of all of three. (355, 360 and F430) It is no doubt the fastest though and has the best technology.

My order of best looking is this:

1. 360CS
2. 360 spyder
3. 355 spyder
4. 355 coupe
5. 360 coupe
6. F430
7. F430 spyder. -- these lines don't flow well with the HUGE air intakes.

Anyway, I would not sell a 2001 red coupe either! That car is amazing and so rare!!!

The F355 is on my list of cars to own, but like the topic of this thread indicates....I will NEVER sell my NSX's. They are amazing vehicles, and when I get into them and turn the aluminum key, my life gets that much better. Today my wife asked me if I would mind going to the store to pick up some groceries.....a smile came across my face, and my first thought was turning the key in the NSX and hearing the Taitec exhaust bark to life...'Sure I will go to the store, babe....no problem...' ;)

I completely agree with you DeHaldaswerth. I went to the Auto Show last night. While the new C6 looks better than the C5, it will be soon be common when 20,000+ of them hit the streets. I'm sure some Vette owners will also get the Z06 body kit once that hits the market. Boring!

The new M3 Competition model looked good too. Better brakes and handling than the base M3. I think it would be my first choice if I did not have a NSX.

Interesting to see that not that many people were even looking at the NSX at the Auto Show. Most were flocking to the neighboring BMW and Mercedes displays.

I concede that all these other cars have great power but many don't stir up any emotion in me. That's why I don't have plans to sell my NSX...

I just came home from the grocery store and on the way out my wife and I were getting into the NSX and these two guys just stopped in the parking lot and stared at the NSX. My wife laughed and said, 'Do you think they liked the car,' and I just had to chuckle. One of my first thoughts was that this would not happen if I was in a Corvette. I really do love driving this car.....the reactions from those who see it amuse me to no end. :D

Maybe they were in disbelief of you putting groceries in the car?

LOL!! Well....considering that I have used this car for hauling beer kegs, a full set of wheels and tires (yeah...the trunk did not close that time), and also some stuff from the local Home Depot.....those guys have not seen the half of it. :D

When I moved from NYC to NM, I made the mistake of selling my '91 NSX. That was 18 months ago. I tried to replace it first with a Boxster, then an '80 Carrera.

One day I was driving the Carrera on Route 10 heading out of Las Cruces, NM when I saw a silver NSX flash by in the opposite direction. I caught a glimpse of the low slung nose, the beautiful lines and the absolute uniqueness of the car.

That evening I put the Carrera on e-bay and went hunting for my second NSX. I found a '98 spa yellow targa and bought it. Elapse time from seeing the silver NSX to purchasing my '98 NSX--- 72 hours.

I can only equate this to breaking up with someone you loved, straying momentarily, then meeting that person again with a new perspective and greater appreciation, and a chance to rekindle old passions.

Not a day goes by now when I fail to fully appreciate my NSX-- how it looks, how it drives, how practical it is, how unique it is and how much I love it.

Mike, the 355 is a wonderful car, the sound is fantastic, but you'd better have a mechanic on staff, fuel rails alone need regular attention. Get a ragtop, so you can hear it better!!!!

DeHaldaswerth's ad to sell his super, super rare NA2 coupe was what set me off on my quest to buy an NSX. I think by the time I was ready to ask him about it, he had taken it off sale. By then, momentum had taken over and I would not be stopped.
