I'm considering the following upgrades which would cost $3500~ for P&L:

Kenwood Double DIN
SOS subwoofer enclosure
Polk SR-Series door speakers
Polk 3 channel amp
Polk Subwoofer

and everything else to make this work from SOS

My question is if I want to sell the car in 6-12 mons will it hurt my resell value? Will the mods add some value to the car?

I think it will remain uneffected. When people are looking to buy an NSX, they are likely not interested in the stereo. Probably better to part out and re-coup a bit of the cost back.

I had installed the Kenwood 8120 with nice speakers and all of the extras in my 1992 NSX. Everything was tastefully done with a lot of custom work to keep it as stock looking as possible. However, when I sold the car I had to lower the selling price to the point where it made more sense to remove the system. The buyers I came across were looking for the lowest entry price point and, while they liked the setup quite a bit, were not willing to place much value on it.

I had it installed in my 97 and am very happy that I did so because it is such a nice system. I would suggest that make as few modifications to the interior as possible if you are looking at eventually reselling because most NSX buyers are looking for unadulterated cars. My stereo shop even custom molded my tweeters into the mirror caps to avoid making any holes in the door panels (on the premise that they would be much less expensive to replace). I kept all of the original stereo equipment and console just in case I ever decide to sell the car. Hope this helps.

I honestly don't think it will add any significant value to the car by putting an aftermarket system in the car.
Some folks frown upon a car that has had the system changed for fear of not knowing the abilities of the installer.
I'm in the same boat as you though as I have an a/m system in my car.

Personally I was glad there was an aftermarket radio in my car when I bought it. I would've ended up doing it anyway (and I did change it all out for something else after a few months), but not having to deal with cutting the center console or buying a new one made it that much more appealing to me.

It will increase the value by $3500 for the upgraded stereo, and then decrease the value by $3500 for not being stock.

Net affect, no change: do what you like.

I think the bottom line is this.....you most likely won't get the $3,500 back. If you perform an upgrade that is easy to reverse so that the car can be returned back to stock I would make the assumption that it wouldn't impact resale.

I wanted a car that did not have an aftermarket stereo, I wanted a factory installed system.

The reason I wanted the stock factory installed system is because I have witnessed what some audio installers do to cars. If it had an aftermarket system I would be worried about the following: (short list off the top of my head, I'm sure others have more to add)

Did they unnecessarily cut any wires during the install that would prohibit me from reinstalling the factory system?
When they removed/reinstalled the center console did they damage it?
Was the center console properly cut?
Was the center console painted some terrible color that I now have to repaint?
When they installed the door speakers did they cut the door panels?
Were the speakers properly mounted?
If they installed an amplifier where did they mount it?
If they mounted the amplifier behind the seat did they drill into the gas tank?
If they mounted the amplifier in the trunk is it properly grounded?
If they mounted the amplifier in the trunk is it properly secured (SOS Panel) or did they drill into the trunk?
When they put the door panel back on how many of the plastic tabs that hold the door panel on did they break?
If they ran cables to the amplifer in the trunk did they cut a hole anywhere or did the find the correct location to run cable?
If they installed a subwoofer in the floor did they cut the bolts that prohibit you from remounted the factory bose subwoofer?

Its a selling point if the person is interested in doing the same mods but dont ever expect to get even close to what you have invested in the car.
