Your opinion on gauges, what would you rather have?

I'm going to mount a boost and fuel pressure gauge in my car. I've decided to either (1) mount an analog boost and fuel pressure gauge in place of the ash tray door, or (2) mount a dual Spa Designs digital boost/fuel pressure gauge in place of the coin holder behind the shifter.

I'm looking for opinions on which everyone thinks would be better.

IMO, if you'd like to be able to monitor the gauges, the more forward and upward the better. Makes it easier to glance at while driving.

How often do you guys with superchargers look at your gauges? I thought it would be something nice to have to check every once in a while, but not every day. I may be wrong.

I would mount the SPA in the ashtray door location. The SPA will set off an alarm if your fuel pressue gets too low, reducing the need to monitor it.

As often as possible-- atleast every few seconds. If you mount them in a good place you will be able to see them out of your peripheral vision without actually having to *look* at them.

If you aren't going to use them, don't waste the money installing them. Or, install them in the glovebox or in the center console box thing... Cheers,

the spa is nice, many programmable features such as max recall, variable alarm perameters etc... one thing though, it is very difiicult to read if it is not placed at the correct angle to the driver. the numbers "dissappear" if its angled too far up or down, or left to right.

Interesting and helpful comments. Can you set the fuel pressure alarm for a given boost level? My limited understanding is that fuel pressure is different for different levels of boost. For example, it would do no good to set a floor at 50psi when you need higher psi at full boost. I would think fuel pressure is more important when higher and under boost.

You would give up the entire ash tray for a single gauge? I don't think the coin holder would be that inconvenient. Woody, do you think the SPA can be read at the angle of the coin holder? Is it more of a problem during the day or at night?

No.

Given the two options you presented, the console would be my choice. So, yes, I would mount one in that location.

Personally, I do.

I haven't noticed that problem. Photo below is from an angle greater than the drivers position, and I think you can clearly see the LCD data is visible.

Now, if you want expand the possibilities, the first question I would have for you is "are you using an AEM?" If so, I'd say check out the Gauge-tech unit for a custom center console install.

My V-1 is hardwired and mounted on a Dali T mount. Read-out is in the mirror. However, I just did put a 12v recepticle back into the console.

I hate the pillar mount gauges. IMHO, it really impaired my peripheral vision and if I need to look to the left for certain turns. It really is too bulky.

I would use something like in my race car. Easy to install and priced very reasonably.

BTW, we sell this product too, now.

Another option for gauges is the new Nexus line from Auto Meter. I just recieved my Nexus Boost, Oil pressure, Oil temp., and Water temp. gauges. They look great. They have datalogging capabilities, peak recall, adjustable warning points(where the whole gauge turns red at your given input...), and way to many other features to note. Check them out, they are worth a look. Btw, its has a main brain box like the Defi gauges and comes with a remote also.

Pull the stock radio and diskchanger. You'll save weight and make lots of room for more gauges. Then run the amplified speakers off your IPOD. And the best part is you can use all the extra wiring from the center console back to the empty diskchanger for signal wires into the engine compartment. No need to route a bunch of new wires for your gauges!

I don't think IPOD's have radios built in.

No, but any good battery operated radio will drive the speakers as well. I've even started seeing aux inputs on new cars just for IPODs and other MP3 players. Heck, where else can you carry 10,000 of your most favorite songs, books, and technical series audios in the palm of your hand. When you're on the track, you just leave everything in the pits, no extra weight.

Oil Temp in coin pocket

APEXI in the Ashtray slot. I will modify this, I want to keep the door . Also the Turbo timer will be place inside the clock slot, Stealthy. I will add the AF gauge after I find one that I like.

I guess what I was getting at was that I couldn't listen to the radio if I only had an IPOD.
