I've been thinking of getting something like this for a little while now. I've looked at both, but don't know much about the differences. I know about the iPod, but I don't know anybody who has bought a Zune yet. What are people saying or experiencing with the Zune? What are the advantages over the iPod? FYI, the iPod would be the 30gb video version and the only Zune available right now is of similar size.

I don't know how great the Zune is, but I believe it can hold 1,000 pictures which the ipod does not. YahooAnswers can give you answers. Hope this helps.

The iPod holds pictures and plays back movies as well. Anyhow, I think the biggest thing you should investigate is the ease of transferring your own music as well as purchasing music. There are some serious limitations to the Zune right now. Frankly I'm pretty disappointed with Microsoft's efforts. They know they are competing against a very well established player in Apple and they certainly have the financial clout to do whatever they want so it's surprising to see the poor launch and music availability/compatibility issues.

Maybe once MS sorts out all the issues it will be a different story, but for now there's no question (in my mind) that iPod is the better overall solution.

IPOD is the only way to go + link this with a compatible head unit and you can get all the music and movies you can handle.I have one hooked up to my DVD player and its great.

iPod has years head-start, and so if you're going to be looking for lots of accessories, that's the way to go.

I'm considering a Zune because I absolutely detest iTunes, and will not install it on my computer. There are ways to get music to an iPod without iTunes, but they're all fairly kludgy (as far as I can tell).

Why do you hate iTunes?

I've found it to be a really nice application.

It just does pretty much everything counterintuitive to the way I expect it to.

For example, prior to version 7, if I wanted to Delete a music file, I would try to right-click on the file, and select Delete, just like every other Windows application. Except it's not Delete -- they called it Clear. And it didn't even really Delete the file -- it just removed it from the iTunes list. I still had to go out to Explorer and actually delete the file.

Conversely, in Windows Media Player (the bane of most iTunes fanatics), I can right-click, select Delete. First time through it asks me if I also want to delete it from my hard drive, and there's a checkbox to never ask me again, so I can pick "Yes" and be done with it.

That's just one minor example. This counterintuitivity pervades throughout the app. Everything I try to do with iTunes ends in frustration.

I'm sure iTunes is fine for Apple folk, and for people who need painless syncing with their iPods. I'm not an Apple person, and I don't have an iPod, so for me it's just one PITA after another with the app.

I have a Zune and I really like it. The PC software has a few quirks but its getting there. The device is awesome. And Zune is really the start of a "family" of devices that will fully integrate with Vista and Xbox. The radio tuner is really nice, esp if you go to the gym. If you're not heavily invested in iTunes or other protected music, I'd give the Zune a try. Pics, music and video (you can rip DVDs to Zune too).
