Oil Change questions...

I had purchased my 03 NSX-T back in August 03 and I now have about 4k miles on the odometer.

Is it about time to have the oil changed for the first time? Should I wait until I hit 5k miles?

Also, when I have the oil change done, I understand that it is best to have the Acura dealer do it for me versus an independent shop... Also, should synthetic oil be used or regular?

Thank you for the responses in advance.

check your manual's recommendation. The oil change interval is expressed in miles AND time, which ever occurs FIRST. Since you purchased the car new, I would try to keep its records straight and have all the work done by the dealer. Yes, he may be more expansive, but this will help you in (at least) two ways: #1 you will develop a relationship with your dealer who might go the extra mile for you when you need him down the road, and #2 it will assure you get maximum resale $$$ value when you decide to sell the car since most 2nd hand buyers look carefully the service book. I would keep everything documented (receipts, dealer stamps with dates...)

With regards to your oil preference, I would go synthetic as it makes me feel better (read: peace of mind) knowing that the mile interval is 7,500 on mine. If you decide to put synthetic, buy the oil yourself and ask (politely) for your dealer to use it while you witness the oil change. Although they might not like the idea for you to bring your own oil (read: less $$$ profit for them), explain you are willing to reasonably pay extra $$$ one way or another (i.e. tip the mechanic a bit more you would have, or buy a Acura memorabilia from the gift shop to offset their lack of profit)

hope this helps

I agree with Alex on the Syn, they have no problem bringing my own for the dealer. Welcome aboard :)

It has been noted before (as early as 1999 by Woodwork of Acura/Honda) that the original oil in the engine is best if left until 7500 miles. The manual on previous models referred to 7500 or 6 mos.

If you have not driven too agressively and the oil level is fine, I believe the benefits of waiting till 7500 miles are worth it. After that, synthetics are fine - and you might as well go with Mobil 1.

Oil change

Definetly go to a dealer for oil changes or an NSX shop to make sure you get the NSX filter. Quick change oil shops will not have the correct filter, but they will have one that will screw on and fit. Once again, a bit of peace of mind to know the larger Honda filter is in place and no questin it will hold up to 8K RPM. I am using Redline 10-30 and am very happy with it, FYI.

I agree with Hrant, run the break-in oil as long as makes sense. Coats all the internals with Moly I think, and should help the engine last.
