Front splitters?

Im doing research on what options I have out there for front splitters for the track.

I'm looking for a complimentry set up for my Shine lip, type r hood, Titec GT diffuser and soon to be APR500 wing. Ive been looking around for something that'll close off from the bumper back to the battery tray. Theres obviously the NSX-r under tray that will do just that but I'd like to kill two birds with one stone and get the benifits of a front splitter sticking at least 2.5 inches past the shine lip and close off the bumper back at the same time. Ive seen some products like the driving ambition splitter/undertray:

and looked at APR service custom application:

The DA one looks pretty badass but looks almost like a one-off since I cant find any other info on it, also the price too looks pretty steep for me.

has anyone used or seen an APR one on an NSX?

Ive seen some threads about making custom splitter using alumalite, looks like a pretty good option, but I dont really want to have to take a freight delivery to get the raw sheets then beg borrow and steal the tools I need to cut it to size. Does any one know of a solution that I havent mentioned? Maybe a place in the LA area that can fab something up for me?

I am currently in the process of just making it myself. The prices are crazy stupid and you can just buy thin aliminium or CF and cut it your self.

you might want to post in your local regional forum I'm sure someone knows of a good race/speed shop that can fab something up.The key is how far out from the shine lip can it stick out and still be streetable.

Ill, ask around I know theres a couple good shops around, im leaning towards just making one myself and buying enough to have a couple spares. I've sketched up a few things and it looks like the design that im going to try and go with will have the under tray terminate at flush with the shine lip to the back of compartment line. I'll then build a splitter appendage that will fit over/through provisions on the tray. The tray will be secure but wont need to be as 'hard bolted' as the splitter will need to be. The idea is that I'll be able to bolt it on when I get to the track and remove before I drive anywhere with *gasp*... driveways.

First of all, which Shine lip? The GT or Type 1? I have the Type 1 because it's flat on the bottom, the GT isn't as it goes up in the middle.

I used Alumilite, which is two pieces of Aluminum sandwiching congregated plastic. Much, much stiffer than aluminum. I made mine in two pieces, the splitter undertray that goes back to the back of the bumper area and another piece that covers the battery tray. This way, I can run a "short" undertray that just goes to the edge of the Shine lip and a "long" one for the track that extends out 3".

One thing you have to be very careful about is pulling up to parking spots that have curbs. That's how I ended up with a "short" version. :) Crunched it and had to cut down and make another "long" one.

Does it work on the track? Yep. The car was oversteering like crazy and had to had more downforce in the rear to balance it out.

Youre saying that the apr wing might not be the best for the car? I was under the impression that the NSX wings is a pretty specific design, would a BMW company make something that would be better than NSX specific? Im talking mounts, not airfoil.

Also CL65, how did you cut your alumilite, and how did you bond it?

I was talking about the airfoil. You would have to have a custom mount made to adapt these wings but I really like the designs of these:

Wow billy, those wings actually have a true airfoil. Not some BS cosmetic crap. I would love to see an nsx specific one made.

Captain, that undertray is awesome!

I'm sorry but this thing look like CRAP!I wouldn't even put this on my car if you gave it to me.

The long splitter (pic) is only used for track days, the short version only extends to the edge of the lip and is not visible when on. A splitter and under tray (which is very effective) is used to generate downforce, something that is helpful on the track. There is no need to put it on your car, you bought a sports car that is an automatic.

How does that look like crap?

That is one of the most functional and professionally built diy undertray I have ever seen.

I cut it with a jigsaw. It cuts pretty easy. It's mounted to the bottom of the Shine Type 1 lip with bolts and I also made two L brackets that attach to the OEM tie down brackets (the ones in front of the radiator) that support the middle of the tray. It then connects via bolts to the second piece that seals off the battery tray area. It's as sturdy as a rock. Since everything is bolted up, I can remove the front long splitter and replace it with the short version in about 5 minutes or remove both the splitter/tray and battery undertray and just the lip stays on.

If you "TRACK" your NSX and its not an "AUTOMATIC" you should.I "HEARD" it helps "GENERATE DOWNFORCE" AND help with the OVERSTEERING.Well, that's what I HEARD

hahaha i actually don't track my nsx.. and my NSX "used" to be an "automatic". it's a manual now. but i like the "idea" i want my splitter to be smaller and don't stick out far like that. here's a picture that i might want it to be.

You might want to start with a Shine GT lip and then have some modify it with fiberglass to wrap around like that F458. It has the "basic" shape you are looking for and only sticks out about an 1".

i already have the wingswest lip, i want to see something done with that lip. what kind of material is the shine gt lip anyway? i'm dropped 1.5 inch so i had to get urethane.

Actually, that is incorrect. A splitter would make more downforce on the front, the oversteering would get worse. You have to balance it with either aero for the rear - wing or diffuser or adjust the suspension - tires, springs, dampers or sway bars to compensate.

What you do to one end will have the opposite effect on the other.

LOL!!!

So after weeks and weeks of half assing around I finally buckled down and got the splitter done. It was a total pain in the ass, measure 10x, cut line up, test fit, unbolt, cut, drill etc, etc, for like 10 hours in my stuffy garage. Final product looks pretty good though and will hopefully give front end grip enough to balance out the wing. Best part is now I can use this as a template and build another in like an hour if I need too. Since there is no way I can drive anywhere with driveways with it on without total destruction I cut it down the center so I can 'fold' it up and throw it in my passenger compartment and haul it to the track. I can have it on the car within 10 min ready to go, so not too bad. I used Dibond which is similar to alumilite but has ABS plastic sandwiched between two peices of aluminum. I bonded two 1/4 sheets together so I have 4 sheets of aluminum and 2 thick plastic centers, pretty light and pretty durable. I finished the edge with the truck door guard strips that was suggested and it made the whole thing look pretty good. Better than the wood I see hanging off miatas, anyways

once installed the bottom split and splitter to battery tray seems will be smoothed out with 100mph tape.

Also added more stabilization to the taitec diffuser, I had been told that theres was like 6 inches of vertical floppy movement when I was charging down the straight.

RYU- I never had the R tray I made this one out of the spare DiBond. That piece stays on the car permanently.

Chud- I installed all the bracketry that came with the kit, was there another piece that didnt show up? I wouldn't doubt it evasive mailed it to me in bits they forgot to include this or that and would email me saying to expect another package it was almost like they were just finding bits around the shop.
