A year and a half ago that would've seemed amazing. Now, compared to the iPhone, it's just meh. The big Good Thing about it is that it's open source, so that it won't be tied to a particular manufacturer or service. That'll pull a lot of people, but I suspect it won't convert any of the iPhone fanboys.

an industry-changing move by google.

it'll be interesting to see how the htc / t-mobile device does as a commercial market.

I have to imagine it takes a lot of manpower to build and back an operating system. And they're not charging money for it... Should be interesting. Is it time to buy or sell google stock?

I'm also curious what networks will allow it. I know Verizon is pretty lame with things like the GPS chips in their phones. They won't turn it on for anything but their $10/month app. Their reasoning is 3rd party apps can mess up their network by misusing the GPS. If this new OS is truely open source, then that means the gates will be wide open for any kid to modify and play with things.

Should be interesting...

the reason verizon doesn't like GPS is that they want people to pay for their GPS service rather than have a free option. verizon is notorious for disabling features that cut into selling services they offer and were in fact sued for it in a class action suit over a motorola phone many years ago where they did not disclose they had motorola disable various features specifically for the verizon branded model. if they are trying to claim gps apps can mess up their network, that is absolute 100% RICOCKULOUS (as doug hayashi likes to say).

Granted its the first one released by Google, but its missing some KEY features that makes it unworthy to compete.

http://gizmodo.com/5053747/android-and-t+mobile-g1s-five-most-obnoxious-flaws

One of the biggest: ONE GOOGLE account per phone (if you want to sign in with another, you have to factory reset the phone)

Second, no desktop syncing... strictly uses your google contacts. And I'm surprised the internal storage is near to nothing, you have to micro-SD card to save anything (especially for a device that size, you think they could have thrown in a hard drive).

I'll have to wait till the second or third version comes out.

I was very interested in this phone until I discovered that it has the flip keyboard. I'm shocked that Google is aiming this at all those text hungry 13-yr-olds.

Lame...

I'm no fan boy or anything but i am getting tired of all these half-arse iphone knockoffs.

This is just another in a long line of wannabes that falls short of the real thing.
i hear what you're saying but think the oss stack / google's support behind it (depending on how long that lasts, of course) may well make it a serious contender - even for non-techies - over time. it'll be interesting to see the extent the mobile device consortium's are able to focus and produce commercially viable products.

It's not just GPS, it's bluetooth as well. When I have a customer come to me and say their having problems with their Hands Free Link feature on their Acura, I can guess 100% of the time that they have a Verizon phone.

this is kind of cool. So i'm assuming you still have to get a regular cell phone plan through t-mobile I presume?

At this point its just a phone right? There is no google service plan or anything?

Does anyone know if the "high-end" model they show is going to be released as well anytime soon?

I have not used "andriod" or whatever it is this phone is running but i can't imagine it is any better than the mobile version of Leopard. The google phone is larger and heavier than the iphone with a smaller screen and is a few years too late.
The only thing holding the iphone back is the price and the exclusive agreement they have with At&T. That being said i have an iphone with Tmobile service and i would spend twice what i paid to replace it with another if i ever lost or damaged mine. I've had Treos and BlackBerrys before but they were junk compared to my iphone. I love having movies, tv shows, music, calender, maps, internet, photos and emial all on one easy to use device.
I had to wait 2 hours for an inspection the other day and i decided to hit the apple store and rent a movie while i was waiting. Everyone else in the waiting room was so envious because they were stuck with year old magazines while i was watching a new release.
Those who bash the iPhone don't have one, if they did they would understand it's beauty.

i like the iphone, too - nice piece of work that will only improve over time.

this android-powered device simply represents the starting point for the stack... it'll be interesting to see where it is in a couple of years.

I agree and hopefully Apple will see it as some type of closer competition to the iPhone. That way they'll won't be the only game in town and have to give the consumer what they want as far as changes and improvements to newer releases.

I'm not a fan of the new 3g. The plastic case is flimsy and not nearly as durable as the aluminum one on the previous model. I would also like to see the optics on the camera improved and a video recording function would be nice. Other than that you can find just about anything in the app store. I have a few Nintendo games on mine and when we are stuck waiting at a restaurant or something i let my 6 yr old daughter play with it and it keeps her quiet and entertained.

I don't think the current iphone is the end all be all of mobile devices but imo it is clearly light years ahead of the competition. My wife is on Verizon and she wanted a smart phone after she saw my iphone and its a joke what they had to offer. After looking at everything they had to offer she decided to just stick with her Razr and switch to AT&T when her contract is up. The best they had to offer was a clunky slider almost exactly like this google phone but with a horrible os on it.

haha! You obviously haven't looked at the phones that T-mobile has to offer. That's who I have and I look at Verizon and think, "Why can't T-mobile have cool phones like this?"

Do any of these new-gen phones still use SIM cards? I've just been buying new unlocked phones on ebay over the past few years and shoving my sim card in them. I've been out of my 2 year contract for 4 years! ;)

Anyone know if this phone or any of the new HTC's etc still use sim cards?

Yeah most of them all use sim cards, except verizon. I swapped my sim out of my iphone when I gave it away.
