Bad Ass Sunglasses thread!

Nice choice - are yours polarized?

Not yet. Global Gascans didn't come with a polarized lens option, but I can buy polarized replacements at the o store and pop them in if i want to.

I am actually thinking about polarized orange lenses for my black standard Gascans.

I currently have
Global Gascan
Gascan (Black)
Gascan S (brown tortoise)
Crosshairs (chrome)
Spikes (black on black)
Flakjackets (black)
Montefrios (green tortoise with script oakley)
square wires (gunmetal)
O wires (gunmental- these are rx glasses)
O2s (gunmetal RX glasses)
Hollowpoints (black RX glasses)

Non- Oakley...

RayBan New Aviators- chrome with grey lenses
Bolle polarized wraps (don't know the model name)
Spy Viktor (like wayfarers with gray interior)
Spy Curtis (black/grey)
Smith Toaster (interchangeable lens system- too small for my head though)
Maui Jim Aviators (polarized)

My Snowboarding goggles are Spy Optik

Old Skool (glasses I used to have)

Razor Blades (old kit white with clear stems and purple nose piece)
Mumbos (blue frames purple irridium- scratched)
2 pairs of Frogskins (clear frames / purple irridium, black frames/yellow irridium)
Fives (tortoise- gold irridium)
Eye Jackets (white, black irridium lenses)
Factory pilots (red smoked lens- these look like a ski mask)

LoL

I have been in the Oakley game since the beginning back in the 80's. My Red Factory Pilots were the first model Oakley produced, followed by Frogskins, and Blades, then Mumbos ect ect ect. I have owned a lot of different pairs over the years.

My unicorn glasses are the Jordan Mars- which are sold all the time on fleabay, but at sky high prices. These are the limited edition glasses with leather wrapped nose bridge and earstems. They look wierd as hell, but i have always wanted em.

Next pair will probably be a new pair of RX- I like the tortoise Candidate 4.0, and then I will probably get a pair of the new Felons fitted with prescription lenses

It is a sickness really...

Whats the difference between the Oakley gascans and oilrig. I was in the airport 3 weeks ago in Houston and a sunglass place wanted $130 bucks for them!!!!! I keep saying i would never pay that much for sunglasses.

The Oil rigs are "bigger", and to be honest they look pretty silly on most of the people I have seen wearing them.

Just sayin.

$130 is pretty high price. I would have a hard time parting with that much if the glasses weren't limited edition, polarized, or Rx scripts.

I like the Gascan Asian fit- they are smaller geometry and fit my face pretty well. I was close to getting a pair, but then my wife bought me the Globals.

I prefer Ray-Ban with glass lens. Old skool clubmaster works great for me. Good investment since I owned it for 15yrs and it's never out of style.

$90-$140.

Only mineral glass for me. Ray ban will do nicely, but there's others which do mineral only. I prefer good vision to looking cool. If all fail, i will edge my mineral glasses in a frame i like, coz i'm in optics

Oakley Nanowire 2.0's with HDO/polarized lenses, set me back 550 bux for a prescription set...

If one doesn't give a crap about brand recognition, is there someone who makes quality sunglasses that don't cost an arm and a leg? Like $30-$50? My optomitrist recommended Maui Jim as being the best lenses out there, but they sure aren't in that price range anymore. I recall my wife bought a pair for about $50 several years back, but they seem to be going for $200+ these days. Ridiculous. I went into Sunglasses Hut last week and couldn't believe the crappy plastic feeling glasses that were selling for hundreds.

I need something light for running and bicycling and larger lenses to block out the wind.

I believe the Spy Optic, or Dragon might have a pair that fit your requirements. There are lots of onlne vendors that sell in your price range. Might be hard to get into that price at a shop.

PAC SUN, and Swell.com both retail on line, and PAC SUN is in most suburban malls (you may have to wade through teenagers though)

Gascans are pretty sweet! I have been an Oakley whore since I lived in Hawaii in the late 80's and razor blades were all the rage. I think most of the kids I went to school with spent more money on their Oakleys then their Datsun pickups!

Well I'm really not into name brands but more of what's comfortable and easy on the eyes and practical... I have to give love to.............EAGLE EYES!

"Developed by NASA scientists. Why do police, Marines & Olympic champions choose Eagle Eyes sunglasses? Eagle Eyes view Regular view Because Eagle Eyes give them the edge in safety and performance. Eagle Eyes feature patented triple lens sight saver technology developed by NASA scientists! They are the most protective; brightest sunglasses in the world utilizing technology based on how eagles find their prey from great distances. They block 99% of all dangerous blue, violet, and ultraviolet light, giving you the very best protection against problems that can be caused by sun and glare: headaches, eye fatigue, snow blindness, and more serious degenerative conditions. Clip-ons/Classics Ordinary sunglasses darken and reduce visibly. Eagle Eyes make everything appear clearer and brighter even in haze, rain and snow. Yet your eyes are comfortable. According to Kelly White, Fire Department Battalion Chief, Eagle Eyes improve visual clarity, they are lightweight, comfortable to wear and they look great. Lenses made in the USA.

Yes I was sold by this statement and for $30 bucks you really can't say no...

Found em- the ultimate in frivolous spending...

$4000 for the Carbon Fiber

These must be hand delivered by a leprochaun who rides to your house on a unicorn...

4k for sunglasses? GTFOOH!

Revo still makes the best glass lens (UVA, UVB, UVC Infra-red, blue light protection). 99% distortion free. The glass purity is the highest level. Right there with the glass that they used for the Hubble Space telescope.

Kaenon (founded by an ex-oakley executive) use a superior lens to anything non-glass like poly carbonate in terms of glass-like optical clarity and strength of bullet -proof glass.

I have many Revos and Kaenons and one oakley....

Got some studies to back up those claims? My optometrist says Maui Jims have the best lenses, so go figure. I just buy whatever is on sale. $25 Oakleys last time around, thanks slickdeals!

I've been wearing Arnette Swinger's for the past 10 years. I'm on my 3rd pair, this one is polarized and about $75 online. They fit my big head pretty well unlike most. The first pair got sat on and the 2nd pair got scratched beyond recognition but i'm pretty impressed with how they hold up.

I doubt they qualify as bad ass but people call them my terminator glasses.

http://www.revo.com/#/company

In 1985, Revo began as a small sunglasses brand with a big idea: NASA technology was just as suited for sunglasses as it was for space shuttles. The idea proved revolutionary, as Revo created the most advanced polarized sunglasses on Earth. Today, Revo continues to build on a rich tradition of innovation with Revo Polarcast Technology. Revo has also partnered with adventure-based philanthropists Jimmy Chin and Alexandra Cousteau. The result has been stunning, as Revo continues its mission of creating the clearest and most advanced polarized sunglasses in the world.

Revo's LMS (Light Management System) lenses use an exclusive system that "manages" light. Thanks to a special coating composed of multiple layers of titanium and silicon oxides. A Revo LMS lens acts as a veritable equalizer of light: it eliminates 100% of harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays, which are responsible for burning and irritation of the eyes, and can be a possible cause of conditions such as conjunctivitis and cataracts. It blocks up to 97% of infrared (IR) rays, which cause eye reddening and dryness. It then processes violey/blue light by filtering out harmful rays while passing the part of teh spectrum that is necessary for distinguishing the colors. Color focusing is improved and vision is sharper and brighter.

SERILIUM: THE STRENGTH OF SERILIUM
REVO POLARCAST LENSES ARE MADE FROM SERILIUM, ONE OF THE ONLY LENS MATERIALS CAPABLE OF WITHSTANDING HIGH-VELOCITY IMPACT FROM OBJECTS LIKE GRAVEL AND SAND. BUT IT DOESN’T STOP THERE, BECAUSE WE GO TO GREAT LENGTHS TO ENSURE THAT OUR LENS MATERIALS REMAIN FREE OF ANY IMPURITIES THAT AFFECT LENS CLARITY. WHICH COULD EXPLAIN WHY SERILIUM IS THE PUREST FORM OF POLYCARBONATE KNOWN TO MAN.

INFUSION MOLDING: LESS IS MORE
THE MORE LAYERS YOU PUT BETWEEN YOUR EYES, THE HARDER YOUR BRAIN HAS TO WORK TO COMPENSATE FOR OPTICAL DISTORTION. REVO POLARCAST LENSES ARE INFUSION MOLDED INTO A SINGLE LAYER, ELIMINATING GLARE WITHOUT SACRIFICING CLARITY. THE RESULT IS A LENS SO CLEAR AND ACCURATE THAT IT PERFORMS BEAUTIFULLY IN CLARITY, POSITION AND REFRACTION TESTS. INFUSION MOLDING ALSO GUARANTEES THAT GLARE PROTECTION CAN NEVER BE WORN OFF.

LENS COATINGS: THREE TIMES THE LENS COATING. THREE TIMES THE PERFORMANCE.
EVERY PAIR OF REVO SUNGLASSES BEGINS WITH A SELECTIVE WAVELENGTH ATTENUATION COATING WHICH IT ALLOWS USABLE LIGHT TO PASS THROUGH THE LENS WHILE BLOCKING GLARE FROM HAZE, FOG OR OTHER FORMS OF DIFFUSED LIGHT. NEXT, WE TAKE GLARE REDUCTION A STEP FURTHER WITH AN ANTI-REFLECTIVE COATING TO ELIMINATE ANY LIGHT THAT BOUNCES OFF THE INSIDE OF THE LENS. FINALLY, OUR EXCLUSIVE ELEMENT SHED COATING ENSURES THAT VIRTUALLY ANYTHING WILL ROLL RIGHT OFF THE SURFACE OF YOUR LENS, WHICH KEEPS YOUR LENSES CLEANER, LONGER.

Oh come on. SERILIUM = Oakley's Unobtanium. Got something that DOESN"T come from Revo? Where perhaps someone unbiased did a comparison of materials used on Oakley, Revo, Maui Jim, etc?

Of course everyone company's marketing materials are going to say they're the best.

BTW I've owned Revos among others, I don't have a personal preference. I just like factual data to back up claims of why something is 'the best'.

I have 2 pairs of Kaenon Kore

2 pairs of Revo's (lost 2 others)

1 pair of (at the time) oakley's most expensive ($300+~) sunglasses and had the frame in custom powder coated yellow.

for clarity, seeing in the shadows the oakley falls behind the Revos and Kaenons.

That matters to me for biking and street racing 600HP car where I need as much visual information to make decisions......

Revo's founder Mitch Ruda, an optical engineer, decided to adapt technology developed by NASA, and use it to create sunglasses. The technology in question was the special coating NASA gives the portholes on its satellites to protect them from radiation found in outer space. The protection afforded by these glasses, and the excellent quality of vision they provide, are one of the main reasons for the brand’s continued popularity.
