Apparently the BMW M5 has microphone and sends the sound of the engine through the car stereo to make it sound more sporty.

Curious what everyone thinks about the idea.

Lame, but they get away with it b/c it's a "BMW"

And it's also the the Ultimate Homewrecker Machine:biggrin:

BMW owners twice as likely to be adulterers as drivers of other brands

We're not so sure how scientific its poll was, but an online dating service that calls itself the U.K.'s largest for married people says that men who cheat on their wives are twice as likely to drive a BMW than any other brand of car.

According to NineMSN.com, Illicit Encounters points to the "intrinsic link between success and cheating" to explain the connection between Bimmers and adultery. Some 19 percent of the dating website's members drive a BMW, including 11 percent of the women who responded to the survey, according to the report. Coming in second on the survey was Audi, with Mercedes-Benz a close third. While BMW may not be outwardly proud of this "victory," we're sure at least someone in Munich is glad to have bested its German rivals.

Speaking of which, scroll down to watch a classic Mercedes commercial about a "happily married" couple.

Most people (including me) don't care for the Active Sound system according to this poll.

Seems like a cheesy idea to begin with:

Adjust the volume of the engine sound - very cool. You can always turn it off if you're going to a funeral.

Actually, you can't adjust the volume. It plays even if you turn the stereo off. You have to pull the fuse to make it stop and of course that means no music. It's also not a microphone (I imagine that would also magnify road noise and squeaky belts and suspension)--it's sound samples manipulated to match what the engine is doing.

I thought it was slightly wrong for the Z4 to have a pipe to bring induction noise into the interior, but this is very wrong, IMO.

The BMW Z4 had this too....not through the stereo but a diaphram and pipe off the intake leading into the cab.

At first i thought it was cool idea (if it was a microphone) but using samples is pretty weak!!

To me it would be like opening the window to hear what's outside or just putting a mike outside if you have concrete walls.

I cannot think of a logical reason to dislike it. Ferrari and other manufacturers spend millions on acoustic design; the concept/end result is not all that dissimilar to what BMW or the electric car manufacturers do by adding sound via speakers.

That being said, I still do not like it and with absolute certainty would make fun of a friend if he had that contraption in his BMW.

they probably dont want you to hear the rods knocking and metal grinding
new from the dealer LOL

it like playing mozart as the plane is about to crash makes you forget your gonna die.

hahaha for those lost as to the symbolism of my post...back in the day of my ten speed chopper which looked like a motorcycle.........sans motor......we would tape baseball cards to the fork so that the spokes of the wheel would rapapapapapapaapaapapapapap on the cards, giving us as the young pilots the false sense of well a motor:smile:
