Anyone seen/driven a Zanardi, can you give me race driving comparison to a stock NSX on the track and/or autox? Over or understeers at the limit? How is it to race at 10/10ths? Estimated quicker lap times over stock? Specifically I was considering how it would do in SCCA AS stock class auto-x vs. the C4 Vette and Boxster S? Worth the extra $$? Is the final drive ratio same as all North American NSX' or 4.2 or? Thanx!

There are a lot of issues in your questions. But just in general I don't see any down side to owning a Zanardi edition. If you can find/afford one, why not? Unless you want to tear it apart and rebuild it as a racer. Then why bother spending the extra bucks.

But autox car comparisons aren't of much good. I have a friend that runs a Ford Escort with a bone stock engine who beats almost everyone including most of the C4s in raw times. Every event he reminds us that it's mostly the driver in this sport and not the car. I run in ASP class because I put the Zanardi suspension on my 94. I've beat a lot of Boxsters, C4s, and a Zanardi Edition. But that doesn't mean I had a better car. (OK, it is better than the Boxster and the C4, but you know what I mean)

The NSX isn't an ideal car for autox to begin with. It's much more of a track car. But you certainly can be successful at autox if you drive well. Unfortunately there are so few NSXs in autox across the country, it's hard to get a baseline on what really good drivers can do with them (you don't see NSXs at the nationals).

With that said, running a Zanardi in AStock should be VERY competetive compared to a stock NSX. With just the Zanardi suspension parts, I'm doing quite well in ASP: 3rd place so far this year.

Go for the Z

Yea, my other thought was to buy a 94 and modify to SCCA ASP or SM2 with a supercharger. It would probably be less expensive than a Zanardi and faster too. And I can choose my color.

How would you quantify & describe the handling improvement when you switched to the Z suspension? A mild or massive improvement on the track? Too harsh on the street?

I've always wanted to take a Z to nationals & kick some C4 butt. However I may get more everyday pleasure with a SM2 NSX, altho it might not keep up with the SM2 Z06' at the track.

BTW how hard is it to keep a black NSX lookin good, that is also tracked? TIA

Adding the Z suspension was a great improovement. More than mild but not quite dramatic. The daily ride simply had a more sporty feel. But on-course, I had a big gain in lap times. The handling was soooo much better. I would never settle for stock again.

W/O a blower or turbo on the X, the Z06 just has so much more HP it's hard to compete. But in autox the winning is in the corners, not the straights. I'm very close to some Z06s despite the more than 150 hp advantage they have over me.

I would love to see you go to nationals.

It is really hard to keep the car looking good. After a while you start to think of the car as more of a racing machine rather than a concourse display. You wear the rock chips and the dirt as a badge of honor. Looking good is always nice but winning is far more important.:D

Keep us informed as to what you do and how you do.

Tank

Do you have other suspension/chasis mod beside the z suspension?
what kinda wheels/tires do you use on track/street?
I'm also wondering if it's possible to put Z springs with koni shocks, is there any downside? (the ride becomes bumpy since it's not perfectly valve matched with the springs)

TIA

I have no problems with the Zanardi/koni combo.Shocks work well for the spring rates imo.I like a sporty ride so not harsh imo.
