Any M Z4 coupe fans?

Last time i checked, E46 M3's redline at 8,000rpm

I thought it was lowered in the M3's motor....I remember reading an article in Roundel saying the S54 motor issue was due to a corporate ad campaign stating something about marketing the impressive redline. The S54 motor in the MZ3's had a lower redline from factory and never had any motor issues, IIRC:wink:

Well that motor was used in the Z3 M Coupe/Roadster, E46 M3, and the Z4 M Coupe/Roadster. Ive driven all of the above but don't recall every detail like redline so I am not 100% sure, when i breifly researched each car, everything I found said all 3 cars had a 8,000rpm redline...

Roundel August 2008 issue, the M coupe redlined at 7600 vs 8000 in the M3. No warranty or service issues in the M coupe/roadster? The service campaign on the S54 included a DME software update that lowered redline to...guess what? Presumably to 7600, very under the rug cover up and costly too:biggrin::tongue:

I never heard anything about new software for the E46 M3 lowering the redline to 7,600. Ive never driven an E46 with that redline. I think I remember my friend's Z3 M had that redline but not the Z4. All the power in that motor is right at redline...

Regardless, I like the look and want a MZ4 Coupe:biggrin:

Theres a little info on the early s54 problems.
Cliff notes; only Oct '01 - Feb '02 production s54's were affected.
Connecting rod bearings and oil pump replacement along with computer reprogramming were part of the campaign but theres no mention of 7700 rpm redline.
S54 Z3M's were not subject to the campaign but still covered by the extended powertrain warranty.
S54 powered Z4Ms are advertised at 330hp at 7900rpm. My tach shows redline at 8000rpm. I've put the needle in that range so I know it redlines somewhere in that neighborhood. Sorry to go off topic, but I wanted some clarity on the subject:smile:

46 M3 will lower it's redline to 6500RPMs if it detects itself in an inconsistent state. Pre-2003.5 models that have not updated their software code can be "coaxed" into completing a complete run to true redline. This is accomplished by a number of "tricks" and "dances" with DSC and key position. Most concluded that only having DSC off will work.
Some aftermarket software inadvertantly allowed some M3s to redline to 8Krpm on the dyno. There are some who pulled fuses to disengage DSC but this simply equated to turning DSC off.[So if you have a more recent E46 M3 model and/or have gotten updated software (i.e. Rod Bearing Recall period), then you probably can not accurately dyno the M3.

I guess the CSL redlines 7900RPM, M3 8000 without update and new ones 8250. Looks like the V8 is holding up better than early model E46's. :)
