Have 01 without cats, and it failed 3 points on the state inspection. It was bought that way and has passed last two years with no problems, this year is different for some reason. They only hook it up to computer thru connection in the dash on passenger side. I drove it for like an hour and it still did not pass. I dont drive the car too often, thought maybe that was the issue...any ideas? The check engine light has been on since i bought the car, figured it was the missing cats, but i can unplug clock fuse and it goes away temporarily. Are there any tricks to get it to pass again?

buy some used oem cats and put them on - might want to replace the o2 sensors while you're at it.... I've been down that road before...

what headers are you using?

Look into getting a defouler. It's basically like a spacer to take the o2 sensor out of the direct path of the exhaust and trick the computer like its working properly. Very inexpensive fix

I'd have a good smog tech take a look at it. It could be as simple as a vacuum hose that has wiggled loose. Also make sure your gas cap makes a good seal. Other than what the others have said regarding the O2s and the cats.

I seem to remember that in Texas the ODB II cars are tested by the data link, if the car indicates everything is working, they pass the car. I'd suggest starting with a trip to Autozone or O'reilly's and have them scan the codes. I'm not sure how it would have passed previously with a check engine code, unless it was something non emission's related (not sure what it would be), but now something more significant such as EGR or O2 or the like are now being reported and failing the test.

I remember getting my 92 tested in Austin a few years back. Because it is an ODB I car, they perform a visual and then tailpipe levels test. The spark plug wire signaled tach pickup kept falling off, they ended up having one mechanic hold the probe whilst doing the test, but it passed the tailpipe numbers with flying colors.

But like I said, with ODB II the tailpipe can be perfect, but a faulty sensor code will fail the inspection, as far as I know.

You can purchase any of my test pipes or high flow cats and you will pass the test!
