Cat scratched my NSX...call PETA!

I walked out to the garage and noted our black cat on the roof of my black NSX. I yelled out (wrong thing to do) which scared the cat and he scampered down the car. Upon close inspection there appears to be several fine, shallow, parallel scratches in the paint over the roof.

I reviewed FAQ's for the appropriate repair strategy but did not get any answers. Any suggestions from this experienced group?

Thanks.

Try a scratch remover like Mother's. I heard they can sometimes hide minor scratches pretty well. And get rid of the cat pronto! Or buy a car cover.

A similar product is Meguiars #9 Swirl Remover 2.0. I've used this and it works very well. It is slightly abrasive, so you will be buffing off paint; but that's exactly what you need in this case. The nice thing about this product is that it is fine enough that it leaves the finish shiny. Don't forget to apply your usual wax or protectant afterwards, since this will remove it.

The only reason I mentioned Mother's is a testomonial from a fellow Mustang owner:

sooner or later it was bound to happen....i was vacuuming out my mustang
when my 4 year old went to get his scooter (those little silver skateboards
with the handles in the front) out of the garage. i noticed him getting
close and as i got out "joey, watch out for the must......." i heard
it......"screech". argh! my heart leaped as i ran around the car to see
the damage and there it was, an ugly, nasty scratch on my door. :-( it
wasnt just a little surface scratch.....it was one of those "i have
children" deep scratches that start at the top of the door and follows the
contour of the door all the way to the bottom raping the metal of its
perfect, shiny coat and stripping it down to "hurts to look at like watching
somebody get kicked in the nuts" bare metal.

"ok....dont panic....they have body shops for this".

first i had to reassure joey that it was "ok". well, not "ok" for
scratching the car but the look of horror on his little face told me that he
needed my attention more than the car did. i could tell he knew he had
messed up so there was no need to scold him. the lil guy walks around the
car finding water spots for me to wipe off on a regular basis, and he enjoys
doing that with me, so i know he appreciates the mustang finish. he even
calls himself my "pony dude". anyway.....

i wont even quote the numbers that the bodyshop gave me....it was downright
offensive and i think i could have bought a new door for the numbers they
quoted me. one of the workers recommended i just try a scratch remover and
he listed several. 20 minutes later im leaving pep boys (walmart didnt have
it) with a tube of mothers scratch remover and a lot of apprehension.

i dont know much about body work. i dont know anything really about taking
care of a cars finish. i dont know much about abrasives or if this product
even has them. what i do know is that it took less than 10 wipes with this
product to totally remove the scratch. its GONE. one second there was a
huge gaping wound in the finish and now i once again have what appears to be
a perfect door. if there are any type of harmful abrasives in this product
they cant be any worse on the finish than a scooter handle, thats for sure.
i think ill keep it around, maybe even try it on my atv. :)

I bought a bottle of the stuff, but haven't tried it out yet.

Thanks for all of your advice! It's nice to have so many people "come to my rescue".

I can one-up that story. I was picking up my sister from riding lessons one time (in my mint '65 MGB) -- when I came out to the parking lot, there was a GOAT on my hood! I got it off by picking up the damn thing

I have a LARGE hungry dog. And it just climbed up on the hood, and scratched around trying to get her footing. I'm looking for a DOG REMOVER!

Sounds like I'm not the only driver with a scratch on the paint.. is this a good or bad thingy to know?? =P

what will you guys do with it? try to rub it out? retouch it or have the whole panel repainted?
