Cold Start Up Problem

My '91 NSX has recently developed a cold start problem where the fuel mixture appears to be very rich - like a choke being full open - the exhaust is smoky and reeks of unburned fuel. The idle is surging up and down about 500 RPMS. After about 5 minutes it will suddenly lean out and run perfectly. Any ideas on a fix?

I suggest that you check your coolant temperature sensor to make sure that its resistance is in spec. Refer to the service manual for the correct test values. Cold start enrichment is typically determined be the engine coolant temperature. If the ECU is reading a temperature that is much colder than the actual temperature it may be applying too much enrichment for the engine's actual temperature.

The coolant temperature sensor that the ECU monitors is not the same as the coolant temperature sensor for the dash gauge so make sure that you check the ECU,s sensor when doing this check.
