DIY Blacked Out Roof

While working on my S2000 last night, I remembered that non-black S2000s came with a black film over the windshield frame. I'd always loved the look of the NSX-R with the black roof, but I'll be damned if I was going to have the roof on ours painted. Inspiration struck, and I grabbed some of the wife's ultra-thin gloss black 8yr cast vinyl and carefully started applying pieces to the roof of the NSX. Washable, waxable, conforms perfect to compound curves, doesn't hurt the paint and cleans off in a few minutes.

I'm only partially done - need to do the driver's side and the top of the windshield frame, but the end result is just what I was looking for:

Please, I can't stand to look at your beautiful car with those frigin rakes and shovels just waiting to fall and scratch your car:eek:

I actually used a bungee cord around the garden tool.... just in case! But then, I am the paranoid type:D

They're actually hooks - kinda hard to knock them off. That said, the new house we're building has a bigger garage and an isolated bay for the NSX.

:D

Agreed! I fix dents caused by this quite a bit. The worst ones are when they happen in your own garage, versus someone else in a parking lot.

What exactly is "ultra thin high gloss 8yr" and where do you get it?

There's different grades of vinyl on the market - I used the best material my wife ( www.decalgirl.com ) had. It's a 2.1 mil cast vinyl with a very high gloss that conforms to compound curves. While alot more expensive than standard calendared vinyl, it's rated to last 8 yrs outside and won't fade/shrink like cheaper stuff will.

When the NSX was introduced, every one came with a black roof. Many owners painted their roofs the same colour as the body since, as everyone knows, only black NSXs look good with black roofs. :D

Now that NSXs only come with body coloured roofs, they are being changed to black. The circle is complete!

Reminds me of European or Japanese NSX owners putting US market Acura badges on their cars, while US owners JDM-ify theirs.

P.S. Long Beach Blue Pearl rocks.

So what color do one make the roof of my otherwise all black NSX?

I've almost completed the JDM coversion of my Acura. H-tail lights, H-airbag, H-nose badge, H-wheel inserts, H-"RDS" stereo (which is very cool) and a KM/H Speedo.

Just waiting on my metric climate control... BTW: the units part of the climate seem to be in the display part.

Am I missing anything besides the RHD drive conversion kit?

Makes you wonder - maybe the black roof was the right way to go all along and people are coming back to it. Although I have red NSX, I personally love the look of a white NSX with a black roof.

We're just fans of the NSX-R; before we "settled" for the Long Beach Blue Pearl, we were trying to locate a white one w/black interior. I'm mostly doing the roof for sh*ts and grins for an upcoming car show my wife's business is co-sponsoring; we'd wanted an NSX-R hood on before then, but it's not looking too good. We'll be lucky if our Voks are here in time :(

Looks good. Personally I'm a big fan of the painted roof and windshield trim with black b-pillars like Hishi's car (carbon in his case:

I'm surprised more people have not replied. Be sure to post more pictures when you are finished. Personally, I like the black canopy (even on an NSX-T) and would like to thank you for "Keepin' it Real" on an 02+. ;)

I dunno...White?

According to my resident in Japan brother - two TVs!

I dunno...White?

Doubtful, as it will severely degrade my ability to drive any speeds above the limit....as people will be convinced that the police are trying to sneak up behind them. Which would cause poeple to slam on their brakes upon sight of my now distinctly marked black and white NSX.

As for TWO TV's!I don't even watch TV at home, what the heck am I going do with a TV when I'm driving? TV is a life robber.

I'm going to hold out for Honda to release a JDM RHD conversion kit.
