engine start

i have a 91 with 41000 miles. most of the time, it starts right up. But sometimes i have to hold the starter for a few seconds longer then usual b/c sometimes it jus wont start until 4 or 5 sec of holding the starter. Does anyone know what would cause this? thnx

My guess is the main relay.

sorry, i meant that i must turn the engine over for 4-5 seconds sometimes before it actually fires.

Do a search on main relay just like rbirling said.

I had this same problem. When I changed my air filter it corrected the problem temporarily. But now it only does it sometimes. Sometimes she fires up right away, other times I have to give a little gas.
