Grinding noise after installing RB BBK

My friend and i installed my RB BBK that uses stock calipers and after getting the car back together I took it for a short drive and I noticed there is a odd grinding noise... almost like one of the rotors arent perfectly flat and it feels like someone is riding the brakes it doesn't seem to "roll" as freely as it did before. Any ideas?

Take it back off and double check everything to see if anything is touching/grinding. After that hopefully you will find out what is GRINDING

Try to roll each wheels with your hand and see. You probably need four jack stand and put the car in neutral with the engine off

No hand brake was off fo sho.... im wondering if it something in the rear... I didn't put the rear spacers back on, because it looks like the wheels came out a lil bit as well. I noticed there is alot more front caliper clearance now, compared to the stock rotors. When I get home Im going to crawl under it as much as I can without having to jack the car up again and see if I can see anything. I noticed whatever it is, it isnt a constant grinding sound... well i hear it but at a certain point it gets a lil louder... it oscillates with speed... like a baseball card in a spoke on a bicycle. Just frustrating because I was so excited to drive my car after not driving it for over a month... and i did a lil research on RB and they seem to have a good rep around here.

Heres a question.... do I have to adjust the calipers because the rotors are so much wider than the stock ones? RB had no instructions at all so im just curious while I sit here and think about this at work.

I never used RB before so i don't know but you said the rotor is much wider than the stock rotors? Hummm Idk that don't sound right. Do you think you installed everything right and that everything is tight and locked down? If so maybe you should just take it out for a ride break it in and see if that would helps.

Hope you get it fix. I know how you feel :frown: Everything is gonna be OK  one way or the other!

Hey are you using new pads as well?? If so did you used a require tool to open up the rear caliper cylinder so you can install the pad so it would have clearance to go back onto the rotor or did you just slap pads and force it on the rotors??

If i was there i can definitely figure out why and it wouldn't take me long either but i'm not SORRY :frown:

Yes I believe we used a screwdriver to adjust the rear caliper... I thought the rotors are wider but I could be wrong... im going to measure now that im heading home in a few minutes... and im going to see if the rear wheels are grinding on something. My friend thought maybe they just need to be driven and more but I cant stand that noise. LOL Im also going to maybe jack it back up and rotate each wheel by hand to see if its just one wheel or all the wheels.

I'm curious to know as well ! might be the spacer that your left off LOL

OK I checked and there is no contact of the wheels and body/chassis. The rotors are in fact the same width... so I started driving super slow out of my driveway and I think I know what it could be.... I cleaned and painted the calipers and i wonder if I cleaned off any brake and caliper lube that was on them. Because on one of the boxes was taped two small packets of brake lub... it says to put it on all contact points to eliminate brake noise... caliper slides, and pad slides.... could that be my issue???

If the rotors are slotted you could just be hearing the sound of the slots going past the brake pads. Common on slotted rotors.

If you have the standard RB setup that gives you the larger dia. rotors (NA2 ish type) you have to dremel some material off the stock caliber for the rotor to clear. It was in my instructions from them. It says some cars will need to grind the caliber to insure clearance of the larger rotor. Like everyone is saying pull the wheel and if you have some washers or whatever bolt the rotor to the hub as if the wheel is installed and just spend the wheel you'll see where to grind. simple

here found it

This caliper modification applies to the following Acura NSX OE caliper (13") big brake kits:
  • 2076-311-0 (Slotted only)
  • 2076-351-0 (Drilled & Slotted)
  • 2076-381-0 (Open Slot)

(Picture is just a representation, not the actual NSX caliper)

Due to the larger rotor, both edges of the front caliper may have to be ground off about 1-2mm (0.06”) to clear the rotor
.

Also, make sure the brake pad shims aren't scraping as well.

slotted rotors don't make noise.

Roll down your window and drive next to a wall or armco barrier. It sounds more like a "shush shush" type of noise instead of a grind. Kind of like a quiet choo choo train sound.

Could just be me though as I have been told I have super human hearing by every auditory specialist who has tested me. Not quite dog hearing (closer to cattle or sheep ) but can hear much higher frequencies than the average human.

Hi,

i have RB 2 piece slotted rotors on all 4 corners and the noise you probably are hearing is made by the screws attaching the aluminium hub to the rotor ring.

first i heard the noise on the rear wheels when i turned and when the suspension travelled up and down like on speed bumps and stuff... i replaced everything: Coilovers with OEM struts, caliper with another OEM one, etc.... the noise only did go away when i replaced the rotor with a OEM one...

i've been driving it ever since and the noise is almost gone...

don't ask me how and why, but in my case it happened like this.... some local guys told me that 2 piece rotors make this noise because of the type of screws and nuts used.

You have what appears to be a contact scrape mark on the edge of the rotor. You probably need to dremel your caliper as another poster directed to gain the clearance needed.

I had to dremel the entire thing from edge to edge because you could hear it rub as you moved the caliper around in the bracket. Then I coated it in paint just in case. I also had to remove the rear shims and cut the middle tab off the front shims. Now it spins freely with no grind. Love them now.
