I have a 92 red/black and drive it mostly on the weekends. Took it out to dinner last night, parked far away from everyone, got up this morning to wash it and yes.....someone had hit me!!! I have a bra, but the damaged occured directly above the parking light, between the light and the bra. There is only about a 2" space there, but that where it got hit. It looks more like a big rub, but went into the paint and body. No cracking. I am a new owner and I do not know how to post pics, but if there is anyone who had work done on their front end, please let me know and I will email you pics of the damage. I am going to bring it to the body shop in the morning, but I would like to know what some members think the damage should cost to repair. You help is greatly appriciated!!!!

I don't understand this description. Is the metal bent, or not? Is there a mark on the paint, or is it scraped down to the metal?

If the metal isn't bent, maybe the "big rub" can be buffed out. If the paint is okay and the metal is "dinged" like a door ding, a paintless dent repair specialist might be able to fix it inexpensively. Or, it might need to have the whole panel replaced ($$$$). I can't understand this description well enough to hazard a guess. Can you be more specific?

I would STRONGLY recommend that you have a few paint samples sprayed out first before you have the car painted. Compare the samples in all different types of light before choosing one. I've learned that body shops have a hard time matching the red.

Here's my story. I have a red 92 that I thought was in flawless condition. While under parking lot lights one night, I noticed that my bumper was a completely different color than the rest of the car. It looked very orange. I looked at it under different lights the next week and found that the color was perfect during the day buy way off at night under metal halide lighting, sodium chloride? lighting and just about any artificial light. I posted to the forum and found that others had similar problems with matching formula red. Search for the post "formula red paint matching problem."

I took my car to Marshall Services in Waukesha, WI. They do the paint work for Acura of Brookfield. They use BASF paint. The computer said there were three variations for the R-77 formula red paint. Marshall sprayed out the three samples for me and I played with them for a week. I found that they were all pretty good in daylight, but 1 (the BASF code was SR171.50) was by far the best match at night. The two others looked orange under artificial light. Marshall sprayed just the panel without blending and the car is now perfect in all types of light.

I would highly recommend you go through the same procedure or you will have a two tone car at night.

It sounds like you have some scraped paint on the front plastic nose piece and just need paint work? If so ask around other high-end car owners or dealers for recommendations on the best paint shop in your area. gobble has some good suggestions as well.

Thanks to everyone who has given me input so far. Here is a link to the damage photo.

Ouch! From the photo, it looks like the black streaks on the right in the photo might be buffed out using something like Meguiars Swirl Mark Remover (or possibly a slightly stronger compound), getting back to the paint underneath. However, those black marks on the left look like they scraped down through the paint to the black ABS plastic that the nose is made of, which means buffing or PDR (paintless dent repair) won't work.

See what your body shop says. Make sure they're familiar with the NSX paint and know that the clear coat is tinted.

Rickro,
Sorry I'm late posting this, but I just got back in town. Anyways, I see that you already have a link to your pic, but I'll go ahead and post it anyways.
Good luck in repairing it. -Thomas

Just have insurance order a new front bumper that matches the year and model and color exactly (from Honda) and you'll be good to go.

I dont know when they switched to the "new formula red" color, but I hope they didnt change the formulation for red between 1992 and 1995.

A bodyshop tried ordering a pre-painted piece for my car and found out that they only come prepainted in 1995+ colors.

Just out of curiosity, was the nosemask flap tucked under the turn signal lens? It appears that it wasn't in the picture. I belive that that when the other vehicle made contact, the nosebra easily lifted up and allowed the other vehicle to scrape the car. This is a picture of an incorrectly installed nosemask flap that is under the nosemask:

This is the way the flap should be installed.

I believe that if the flap was properly installed, the nosemask edge would have stayed downward with the nosemask edge taking the brunt of the force. The flap would have flipped out giving more protection. JMO.

Sorry to hear your NSX was damaged.

Again... You just need a good paint shop. Replacement bumper covers do not come painted, so if there is no damage to the bumper itself other than scraped paint, just have yours repainted because you would have to have a replacement painted anyway. And if there is only paint damage I really doubt insurance is going to pay for a new part.

You are right Lud. Just came from the body shop. I brought it to Allen's Body Shop in Sorrento, LA. Kenny Allen has been in business for over 20 years and works on plenty of exotics. He had no doubts that he could fix it. Total cost $352.00. A bargain compared to filing a claim for a new bumper. He has worked on vettes that I have owned and is fixing a whole front end of a 99 Viper now. I feel totally comfortable with him working on my car. Thanks to everyone who posted comment and suggestions.
