Built a look over last winter on their 566 "comfort" frame. Used a compact crankset with an MTB 34 tooth rearset. I LOVE this combo. It has the low ratio of a triple with still plenty of top end. And then, whala, sram copied me with their new entry level set. I used flat bars with all sram XX stuff. I come from a heavy motorcyle background so i love flat bars mounted on a very long stem. The XX shifters are, wait i may cry, fantastic. Ergonomic heaven. I put on long bar ends for hand tingle, but never even need them. Bike weighs in at 15.25. Have just under 3k in it, but with the new sram set and less carbon, you could build this for probably 2.2. The look frame really does ride soft, yet i don't think anyone would say its handling is soft. Pics on request.

Ive got two nice ones:

2009 SWorks Tarmac SL2 Saxo with full Dura Ace 7900 and Hed Stinger 60/90s
2011 SWorks Epic with full SRAM XX.

Give me a choice between the car and either of the bikes, and Im on the bikes.

Zuerst, i love Ti bikes. Also, its not so much the total weight of the bike, for me its the frame and wheels that make the greatest impact on the feel of a bike.

SWorks bikes are always a great ride too.

thx for the quick feedback, kyras. reading their webpages i did note that it was heavy - heck, just think of it as extra resistance to help you :) i showed the vid and your notes to my wife and i think we're going to go check one out early next week. looking forward to any / all feedback you have going forward.

Hal, I have a thread about the ElliptiGo on S2ki.com in the Vintage Owners section (over 40 year-old owners are "Vintage"). My buddy, Jim, in Texas, showed the thread to his wife and she came home with one yesterday.

I rode mine down a super steep hill yesterday, to a local bike path, figuring I'd have to walk it back up to get home. I surprised myself and rode it all the way home. First gear (8c version) is fine for super steep hills. Here are a few photos my friend took at the bike path. He's a die hard biker, with a titanium Litespeed (sp?) bike and he tried it out. Of course, he prefers his bike and stopped the ElliptiGo to walk it to turn it around.

No need to hate.

Look at these bikes.

over 40 = vintage ... buahahahahaha, yeah, ok.

back to the elliptigo ...

good info, thx very much, patty ... sounds like a pretty cool way to get the combined benefits of an elliptical and cycling outdoors. (i really enjoy using the elliptical in my garage but miss cycling the local trails; yesterday when i did ride my single, the post-surgery abdominal scar tissue bothered me for until this morning.)

thx again for the feedback, much appreciated. i'm off for my hour of elliptical now.

btw, is there an odometer on there somewhere or do you plan on getting one? are you wearing a heart / training monitor or do you not pay attention to those details.

Here's my Griffen Vulcan (SRAM components) and Softride Classic (before and after Dura Ace 7800 conversion) and Custom Magnesium Rigid bike with a titanium fork:

^I put a odometer on it after my ride on Sunday and have been out of town until tonight so I haven't tried it out yet. I don't wear a hear monitor. The odo is on the left front fork facing backwards. I'll try to get a photo of it for you, after I find out if it works. I also talked to an ElliptiGo rep and she told me the correct number to put in the computer for the wheel circumference. I haven't checked to see how close it is to what I measured by rolling the bike and put in, before she called.

Here is my retro L + S Creation ( Oakland Boss ) row of bikes from 26, 24, 20 and 16. This was at the San Jose Japantown Street Festival, where they had a long row of cars including several NSX. This show organizer, who also runs the Wekfest shows, is a customer of my BMX retro line.

kyras, how's the elliptigo working out?

have been meaning to ask - how has the elliptigo worked out (sorry for the lousy pun) for you?

It's a great workout! I found out that ElliptiGO was coming out with a new 11-speed (11R) in December 2011, and I put in an order for it at Performance Bikes, where I bought my green 8-speed (8C). They allowed me to keep riding the 8C until the new black 11R came in and then gave me my purchase price back towards the new one. I exchanged the 8C for the 11R on Dec. 2, 2011 and have been very happy with the extra 3 gears. The 8C didn't have enough top end and the 11R does. I've been riding it 33 miles, three times a week, with about 1,000 ft of elevation change. It's quite a workout.

very cool, glad to hear about the additional gears and how that's working for you. ~100 miles a week is a pretty good baseline ... i'm betting you're seeing good results in toning / cardio.

thx for the feedback and keep up the good work, er, fun!

My wife was pretty pissed when I bought it but it is the ultimate blend of street and brick performance. Not to mention it was designed for what I feel is the bloodiest, most bad ass version of street bike racing. Cobblestones for the fail!

I have an Optibike that I purchased about four years ago. I am thinking about getting their new 1100R bike. The nice thing about electric bikes is I can ride with experienced riders and keep up and still get a good workout.

I used to own a Bike E recumbent. Nice. Now I have my 1999 Cannondale Super V 400 and my wife and I both own Electra Townie (semi-recumbent) Cruisers for tooling around town.

Interesting updates...

Since the original post things have changed in my stable

Specialized Langster- Stolen from my rented Garage in Chicago. I was pretty pissed.

Replaced that with a Specialized Allez triple which was a great bike, but i sold it to my uncle when I bought my Cannondale F5 after moving to Colorado. The Cannondale is great, but it's a tank. Also, I can't tow my daughters Burly trailer with it using the factory coupling since the disc brake rotor gets in the way. When I tow my daughter I have to use the old Gary Fisher Kai Tai which I still have.

I also still have my Dyno Detour. I have not made much progress on it's build though.

I'm currently in the market for a less expensive road bike to use for Triathlon. I found a Motobecane Super Strada at a decent pricepoint. I'd like to spend less than 1K if possible. I'd likely upgrade once i get away from sprint distance Tri races, but for now this looks like it would get it done.

interesting.

i'm in the process of refreshing our '92 ibis cousin it mtn tandem into a porteur style cruising tandem. that bike has 20k+ miles on it so i tore it down, had the frame powder coated, refreshed drive train and am waiting for hammered fenders to complete the transition. should be a nice ride.

i *hope* have time in may to refresh (paint, drive train, etc) our ryan duplex recumbent tandem with an electric hub that should allow us to enjoy our margaritas as we ride, er, cruise, during the summer.

nice to see the bike thread come alive.

I'm not the only one with an ElliptiGO. I went to the ElliptiGO Rally in San Diego on 9-8-2012. There were three short group rides and I went with the group that rode up Torrey Pines road. It was a lot of fun to ride with other ElliptiGOs and not be the only odd one on the road, with all the bikes. I really love this machine and highly recommend it for anyone who loves running but has knee or back problems.
