Will I get into troubles (legally - like a lawsuit) if I use Kazza/Morpheus and etc. to download MP3s?? What's up with Verizon revealing the names of their customers who used file-sharing programs to download MP3s???

I have used Kazza, but ever since I heard that new, I stopped using it. However, I have a couple of songs that I desperately need to download...

Any comments??
 
Users who make their computers loaded up with files available to others on the network to download are the ones being targeted. Your typical user downloading a file here and there really shouldn't worry about it.

If you're interested in an alternative to Kazza or Morpheus, try Limewire. This is the one I use. It's not as susceptible to hackers and viruses. It's also not targeted by the record industry in their anti-piracy campaign. I don't advocate piracy, but I do think its fair to sample new music before plunking down $15 for a CD.
 
As long as you don't download like 8234092834 songs/movies/softwares/PORN a day and provide 9223470233904058293485924 songs/movies/software/PORN for others to download off of you, you will most likely be fine.
 
Just to really freak you out, many P2P applications show your IP address... so in reality you're more likely to get hacked than busted for illegal file sharing.

There's been a few "busts" in Australia recently; targetting big sharers and swappers at university campuses. At this stage it's mostly all a scare campaign.

Tonight the Australian Record Industry (hello... we use CD's now days... :D) released statistics saying that 11% of music that people have is pirated.

Personally, i say big deal. While I don't d/load mp3's myself, i would certainly consider it before paying $$$ for a CD. A CD costs less than 4 cents to press; someone's making a big profit somewhere. CD's are tooooooo overpriced. i've said enuff. ;)

That's where you're wrong, Tiger. Most cops tend to need their powertrip rushes during their PMS daily. You never know what they're gonna do to you.

ALWAYS run away from cops, that's what I do :D

Be careful using Kazaa because it dumps some spyware onto your hardrive.

I use KazaaLite and it is the same program with out all the spyware.

You can download it at:

Those programs are fine for MP3's, but the best program for P2P sharing is <A HREF="http://www.emule-project.net">Emule Project</A> -- uses the eDonkey protocol. There is nothing you can't get off this ... movies, applications (err...shareware! :D), music ...

If any of those bills pass I'll never buy a piece of music again. I see nothing wrong with sharing music I own. If they are going to go after anyone the should be going after people who do not own the music they posses. I also though that in order to be a pirate of any kind you needed to be getting some kind of benefit from your actions.
 
I think it is impossible they will be able to stop p2p piracy.

New p2p is based on http and dinamic ports making impossible for the service providers to stop the usage of p2p applications without blocking all other Internet related applications.

There's no way to stop data transfer from computer to computer and there's no way to stop music from being encoded (since everything you cann access to listen can be extracted and rewritten).

Encryption (PGP) will also be thrown in to make things for the music industry a lot more difficult.

What should I look for as far as spyware on my harddrive? What should I be worried about? And can I delete their spyware?

Thanks, I use Kazaa and was not aware of "spyware".
