Max width tires on 8" wide rims

hey I found this formula elsewhere searching here ...

rim width[inches] x 25.4 x 1.1 = lower end of 'section width' 'narrowest', then
rim width [" ] x 25.4 x 1.3 = upper end of 'section width' 'widest'...

ALSO if you are doing low profile tires then you'll also need keep width down to the 'lower' end as well....so for an 8 inch rim...

8" x 25.4 x 1.1 and/or 1.3 = 223.5 to 264.1 ...so a 265 is on the extreme !!, and would need to be very 'tall', generally recommended is 245.[mid point]

I also looked at this site also to confirm what a manufacturer suggested for tire width vs rim width..

http://www.michelin.com.au/tyres/passengerCar_pilotSport.asp

In my search I'm going a 275/35 on a 9 in rim, and could do 225/35 on a 7.5..if I could find such a tire, but will stick with 215/40 to match [brand] the rears..Good Luck

Hope this helps

Tire Rack has this information listed for pretty much every tire, I believe. I'd look there if I wanted to know what the manufacturers recommend.

I've been searching for the same type of info for 7" wide rims. I would like to keep my '05 OEM rims but want stickier tires. I really like Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 tires and would like to mount these sizes:

Front: 235/40ZR17, rim widths: 8.0-9.5, 24.4 O.D. (+0.6 taller than OEM)
Rear: 275/40ZR17, rim widths: 9.0-11.0 25.6 O.D. (+0.7 taller than OEM)

Using the formula posted above: 7" x 25.4 x 1.1 and/or 1.3 = 195 to 231.1, the 235/40ZR17 size is outside the range. But has anyone run 235/40ZR17 before on 7" rims without any issues or concerns?
