MP4-12C again

Made out of carbon fiber. weighs 2,886 pounds, puts out 600 hp.

At least it hasn't caught fire! As noted above McLaren is a state of the art racing company and I wouldn't worry too much. Its still a stunner and not your run of the mill F-car.

Come to Dubai there's tons of 458's running around. I'm yet to see a McLaren.

2886 is dry weight. Actual weight is 3150 Lbs. Which is prolly 250 - 300 less a F458.

Believe me - I know and love McLaren's history. I love the fact that Senna drove for them. I like the styling and prefer its interior to the F458's interior. BUT - the car still has to be amazing from a dynamic standpoint. I.E. - Driving feel, handling, braking, steering feedback.

Btw - U haven't seen one b/c they aren't out yet. The Brits are going to be the 1st to get them and they nobody has taken delivery of one.

I would have to drive both to really compare how they make you feel. If you like NA over Turbo, then the McLaren probably isn't the best choice, but until you feel how the power comes on and how the car handles, we are really don't know anything.

If we go off of 5th gear, the Ferrari is just a better all around car. Still its not like the mcalren is crap. And who drives like that on a track anyway???

Ritesh...come over the to the Dark Side:

No, I'll stipulate that the EVO is a fast, nice handling sedan. Just like the 335i which isn't that much more expensive.

But it's not a sports car. If I was looking for an affordable new sports car I'd rather go with the Miata.

2 seats, 2 doors, RWD or maybe 4WD, light weight, fun to drive, excellent handling, not neccesarily with Gobs of power. That's a sports car.

+1 to that. That is also why I was not keen of the pre R35 GTR because it was based on a sedan or it has a sedan version. They even got a estate version of it.

oh man I envy you

the only 458 I've seen was in a showroom.

But man does it look 10X more stunning in real life

it was in the middle of a showroom full of Lambos, Rolls Royce, and you name it of exotics, yet it made all of them look terribly plain and boring to look at.

Ferrari have outdone themselves this time around if that is even possible for such a name-hold of Ferrari.

Re: check it ferrari 458 versus mclaren mc 12

Thanks for posting that!

Damn, surprising comments from a British motoring show. Lets see what Jeremy Clarkson has to say about it.

Thanks for posting, look's like Mclaren didn't make it.I'm glad that it cames from
English TV.

If that tail were a little longer, it would be an NSX's deadringer.

Maybe that's why I like it so much. The NSX has always been little long in the rear, but I definitely appreciate the relatively huge boot.

The Fifth Gear viddy is worrying -- and the 458 is an amazing machine, no argument.

Note the following from the article:
Now, you might have read some earlier reports in the specialist motoring press which comment on this aloofness, citing fractional delays in the active dampers' stiffening-up as the reason for a momentary tactile uncertainty when turning into a bend. I don't buy this; the McLaren is never less than completely accurate and faithful to every steering movement, but the problem in these very early test cars is friction in the steering mechanism. It's within the upper column assembly, it filters out subtle messages and spoils the self-centring, and the engineers are on the case. It's a surprising error and it may have sullied the MP4-12C's initial reputation.

I heard that Honda uses ultra low friction ball bearings in its steering column, precisely to give the best possible road feedback. Domestic U.S. manufacturers have promptly copied that.

I know at least one local member who is wanting to trade in his NSX on an MP4...

That 458 looks freaking awesome.

I wonder how easy it is to get another couple lbs of boost out of the MP12.

top gear just reviewed the mclaren...

set a blazing fast lap time and rides like a rolls royce, but jc finds it lacking the soul of the ferrari.

i could live with that.

Re: did its job...

odd, most car magazines stated the 458 Italia was faster

Maybe it's because the top gear track favors power more so than a regular track.

....or they are using a real driver for testing not journalists.

seems true

especially when you consider that Mclaren have always been known for being an uptight community that are as objective as can be. So apparently from all the testing on the MP4-12C they had one objective only and that is numbers.

So maybe a real race driver would drive the MP4-12C exactly like Mclaren wanted it to be driven and that would make the difference.

Still doesn't fix the boring aspect of it. I wonder if an institute such as Mclaren can be objective about having fun

I know every car has their own feel, but the NSX was considered to be soulless too. With the performance that this car has, the understated supercar look, I think I would be hard pressed not to have fun in it. ...Unless it was outright trying to kill me.

I think I will be ok with it not having a "soul" while ripping through its gears on some curvy backroad... Somehow boredom just doesn't fit into that picture.
