Need help - Is New Formula Red darker than Formula red or not?

I know the FAQ says that for 2000 the red is called New Formula Red and it is supposed to be darker than the earlier red. I have been trying to search the archives (really forums nazi), but I can't find any good pics that show the colors well enough that I can get a feel for the diffrence. I found a post or two that say there is no diffrence? Anyone have any pics or opinions on it?

PS- Does anyone here know anything about the 2000 Red NSX # YT000141? It came out of New York originally and ended up with a 2nd owner in the Florida area. Has 15K

Thanks for the input!
Aaron

94 Green/Tan
00 Red/Black -maybe today??????

I have seen a Formula Red NSX parked right next to a New Formula Red NSX, clean cars in bright daylight, and I absolutely could not tell any difference between them at all. And I have a pretty good eye for color.

I just placed the color swatch from the old brochure up against my car, I can't see any difference, either.

Funny.. when I went to a body shop and ask them for a quote to paint my kits... He said theres 2 kinds of red.. and I saw the formula for new formula red require more mixing of colors..

The paint mixing in PPG at least is quite different, whether that results in it looking much different I don't know personally.

My painter got the codes out of PPG's paint system to show what tinters went in to each of the Formula Red / New Formula Red colours, quite interesting.

Holy 12yr old bump Batman, however I did wonder about this question and answer as when I got my new valance on a couple of years ago they didn't get the colour matched correctly and having a discussion with the painter about it then he was adamant it was the correct one but it looked different

The one thing I do recall is the original Formula Red actually had a red tint in the clearcoat, not sure about the New Formula Red

My $.02

Woops! I didn't realise this thread was so old. It must have appeared in related threads... sorry for the bump!
with your build going on you're forgiven, one thing is for sure painters have issues matching it

The "flex" additive that goes into paint for plastic parts (ie bumpers) can shift the color too.

I believe original factory FR uses slightly orange-tinted paint and darker (maroon or magenta?) tinted clear cloat, while NFR changed to two different color coats (again one being darker than the other) topped with no tint in the clear coat. I forget where I heard or read this info though.

Having seen both side by side a few times, NFR looks very slightly darker to me in the right light/angle. But it certainly wasn't a scientific measurement and could be just my eyes playing tricks due to lighting, the older cars spending more time out in the sun, or even the wax the owners used, who knows. If there is indeed a difference it's pretty subtle.

On a somewhat related note, here's an unscientific test to check your color/hue perception: http://www.xrite.com/online-color-test-challenge

I believe that's the name-of-the-game with regards to Formula Red (R-77) vs. New Formula Red (R-510), the former being a tri-coat/dual-stage finish and the latter being a dual-coat/single-stage finish.

And another idio'NSX tid-bit...

MY99 NSX models had both, in that '99 NSX coupe/T was Formula Red (R-77) and '99 NSX Zanardi-edition was New Formula Red (R-510). In '98, it was only Formula Red R-77) and in '00 it was only New Formula Red (R-510).

For further mind-bending hue-what NSX-factoids, read about Imora Orange vs. Imola Orange here... :D

Pics always help right? Keep in mind the NSX was freshly detailed and the S2K not so detailed lol.
