NSX doughnuts gone bad!!

Back in Jan.of this year my buddy and I were watching the Colt/Patriot playoff game and it was now halftime. So to pass the time I asked him to go with me and video tape me doing some doughnuts in the NSX. First, let me give you a little history about my car and where this idea came from. I take very good care of my baby. Service is done every 4mths. regardless of mileage, it’s kept covered in the garage when I’m not driving it (which is 2-3 days a week), full details are done every 6 months (Jason/luv2detail), and it is never valet parked…ever! I take extremely good car of my car, any number of guys on this forum will attest to that. However; I’ve had this idea in my head that I got from watching a video on the web about 5yrs. ago. A guy with a BMW M3 was doing a lot of doughnuts and burnouts with his car. I thought wow; that seems pretty extreme considering how expensive the tires must be, but later in the video he explained he did it because he was changing the tires anyway so why not have some fun. For whatever reason this rational stuck in my head all of these years, and the NSX is the first rear wheel drive car I’ve had since first seeing that video; so it was now time to head out to the street…big mistake :mad: ! The doughnuts weren’t great but it was fun up until what was going to be the last one anyway. Oh by the way, no NSX was permanently damaged in the making of this video. It escaped with just replacing the bottom two pieces of the front spoiler and an alignment, no wheel or suspension damage :smile: . It was windy that day so the sound isn't great. Enjoy the show.

:eek: well i'm glad there was no permanent damage to the car... although its still VERY painful to watch....

hope she's all better now. thanks for the post!:biggrin:

So you TRIED to brake and they didnt catch?? i think you should definately have that checked- Ive done donutsin my NSX before and had no problems stopping with the abs or anything....

good luck, next time- if there is a next time- rev higher before dropping the clutch- more tire spin and more smoke = less tires

That was fun to watch, of course 'till you hit your lip :eek: Thanks for sharing Gene :smile:

Don't want to sound like I'm a know it all, but I have done some drifting. Here's my 2 cents;

1. You turned the front wheel before letting the rear wheels loose. Hence the "push" you felt when dumping the cluth (and you can see on the video). You're rear tires are wider than your front, therefore have more grip. You also burn up your clutch quicker with your wheels already turned before you spin the rear.

Correction; Light up the rear wheels, then turn the front.

2. When you started to drift the car, you gained too much quick momentum. That always ends quickly. That's also why you only did a 180 before the wheels caught again, then the rear was once again pushing the front.

Correction; When you feel the car starting to gain fast momentum, counter steer a little to keep that "sweet spot" of circular continuous momentum. When you feel the momentum starting to slow again, turn the steering back in the direction you are sliding. Much like doing wheelies, it's all about that sweet spot!

3. When done correctly, your hand on the steering wheel should always continue moving back and forth.

The simple rule of thumb I use when I try to show someone how to drift their car is; Spin, Turn, Counter, Repeat! :biggrin:

Also, watch your revs! Luckily the NSX (at least mine does) has a rev limiter, whew! When you do it right, you should be able to keep a good doughnut doing for a while with an average of 6500 RPMs, unless you are running track tires (then it's just silly and abusive to do doughnuts!)

Practice makes perfect...... and so does a sponsorship from Discount Tires Company!!!!

Ouch! :eek: Sorry bud maybe you want to do that in a big parking lot next time. :biggrin: At least it wasn't really bad. :smile:

I immediately drove the car home and had no issues with the way it drove (stopped), TCS nor ABS lights were on. However; I will have service check it out on the next visit. I think I'm done with doughnuts for now.:redface: Although txChopperguy makes it sound pretty easy. He's right about the "sweet spot" when the car is spinning, if you can keep it there it does feel really good.:biggrin:
