Is open wheel racing dead in US? (Cart, IRL)

Brock Yates in one of the auto rags had an article about open wheel racing. Besides his rant about Tony George he commented on how the future US open wheel drivers are now going into Nascar. He mentioned Jeff Gordon. Here is a 4 time Nascar champ who a couple of months ago got into a BMW F-1 car and came within a couple of seconds of qualifying for an F-1 race! Imagine if he had a year of practice.

I guess I would like to see it like the old days where the best drivers competed in open wheel racing and stock cars. Classic examples are Andretti and Foyt.
