Top off=Torn weather strip ?????

Shortly after I aquired the NSX, I took the top off. I drove around with it off for a few days. When I put the top back on I noticed an increase in wind noise from the driver's side window. Took a look at it and found the weather strip (about the top 1/3) had been torn. The dealer replaced it under warranty but acked like this was the first time they had seen this.

Fast forward a year and a half. I decided to remove the top again and drove around for a few days with it removed. Well, looks like the weatherstrip has torn again. The only thing I can think of is that I had the windows up and down a few times while I was driving. This must cause the weather striping to pull out enough for the window edge to catch it and tear it.

I will be taking it to the dealer in the next few days to see what they have to say.

Has this happened to anyone else?

Not yet (knock on wood) but we take the top on and off fairly frequently and I use the Shin Etsu grease once a quarter.

I also have a 2004. The first weatherstrip tore within the first month I owned the car. My dealer replaced the part and said they had never seen one tear. The next week weatherstrip number 2 tore. I went through a check list to see if I was in some way tearing the weatherstrip in something I was doing. Entering or exiting the car, top removal (though I rarely take it off), or anything else I could think of. After looking at everything I figured out when the window was rolling up it catches the flap on the weatherstrip and tears it. I returned it to the dealer and they replaced the weatherstrip again and adjusted the window. They called to tell me the car was ready and then called back 10 minutes later and said to hold off in picking up the car. I believe they had torn another one while at the dealership. When they called 3 days later for me to pick up the car, the new weatherstip had been installed and there was a silicone type grease spread over the weatherstrip. My service advisor said Acura sent out their regional rep to look at the car and they were aware that there was was a problem with a small number of cars (2004's). They were trying to figure out why it just occuring to just a few cars. He said I was correct in that it was the window that was catching the flap and tearing it as it was being rolled up . The grease was supposed to be a special 3M silicone to to help with the problem. Acura's suggested fix to my problem, on my $90,000.00 car, was to NOT roll the window down for a month until the weatherstrip had settled. Other than some messy windows from the grease the month went by and I started using the windows again. So far 10 months later no problem but I have been out of town a good bit and have not had the opportunity to use the car as much as I would like. So Acura is aware of the problem and they should take care of it for you under warranty. Good luck.

Maybe I should take my car into the dealership sometime.. Its still under warranty and that single gasket is several hundred dollars if im not mistaken. .

I sure am glad you posted this.

Back in June, I took my 05 in for the same issues. I spoke with a service writer at the nearest Acura dealer. She told me that it looked like I had done it and would not honor it as a warrantee item.

So I checked into getting a new one. When I checked the price for the part alone was $800. I believe the parts guys said “Sheesh – they sure are proud of that aren’t they”. Plus, you have to put it on right the first time, other wise the odds are the seal won’t fit. So I was about to check into installation (i.e. they mess up the install they get a new one) when I saw this thread.

So I took it down to the original dealer I spoke to this about. This time I got the service manager (she was at lunch the first time I visited). She seemed genuinely interested in the issue. I had to hound her for a few days, but she did get back with me. They will be replacing it under warrantee.

Personally, on mine, I think the door closing forces the seal up and rips it. Hopefully they will have some adjustment that can be done. I know I’ve read about complicated adjustments that are available on the window. If not, I assume warrantee will cover it for the next few times.

Thanks for posting your experiences. Saved me lots of cash.

Just got this work done. The replaced the seal, but broke the driver side power window button! Oh well, they kept the car for another day as they had the part overnighted. Oh well all’s well that ends …

What is this grease you speak of

Can any of you please post a pic of the rip, or where it was. This sounds to me like the windows may be out of adjustment. (Too high or too inward)

Could be wrong, just curious exactly where they are ripping.

Thanks,

Always impressed to see your list of cars Steve T..and I see you are always updating them too

Took the NSX in and they replaced the moulding - Part number 72330-SL0-T01. The paperwork does not show them adjusting or aligning the widow, I guess they will just keep replacing it until I turn it back in  .

Larry Bastanza - Sorry, no pictures of the torn moulding. Both times mine has torn it looked like it started to rip about 3 to 4 inches from the top, right in the middle and was ripped all the way to the top of the window frame.

Da Hapa - What is "Shin Etsu grease"?

Wheelman - I had to update the list again

Mine is ripped on my 1999. It's ripped about 1 inch below where the window meets the removeable roof. No warranty left for me :frown: so I just deal with it. I'm thinking about taking it to a window specialist to see if they can just seal the rip. I don't feel like paying $600-900 for a stupid piece of rubber. Maybe Acura will sell this item cheaper since they apparently can't build a reliable piece of rubber for a $90k car. Conrad (Powered by Honda) said he had the same problem on his when he purchased his 1997-1999 (I'm not sure which year exactly) but it was replaced by Honda under warranty! His new one hasn't had any problems to my knowledge!
