Track Rims

After 2.5 years on DE driving, I have decided to get dedicated track rims/tires. I want to go with RA1's for tires. I have 2 questions:

1. Do I have to go with 17/18's if I want RA1's or can I go with 17/17's.
2. What rims are you guys using for dedicated track rims?

I have SSR GT1's right now, and was looking for something more durable but hopefully not too heavy.

TIA

Ritesh

I use the OEM 15/16 combo...I like it...I think it creates understeer inherently from Honda's conservative design...but it is cheap on RA-1 tires and still provide decent performance...I dont know how much better performance you get if you upgrade to better wheels and tires...

15/16's don't fit on a 1998. I am already made that mistake last year.

17/18 or 17/17 are the best ways to go and RA1's are available for either. You can also consider 16/17 (use cheap stock rims) but the only 16" R tire with a small enough OD to fit in the front is the 225/45 yoko a048.

I use 17/17 5Zigen FN01R-C with 205/40 and 255/40 RA1's. The rims are pretty light and have stood up to some abusive drops off the track curbing edge. I put around a dozen events on these tires and they are great, still with some life left. But I am replacing them with 235/40 275/40 so I can transistion turns a little quicker.

Hy have wheels ce-28n.

Front-17x7.5 ET-43
Rear-17x9.5 ET-40

Tyres

Front-215-45 A0-48 M/M
Rear-255-40 A0-48 M/H

I'm running the OEM 94-01 seven spokes... the car came with two sets of brand new wheels (others are ROH 18/19) so instant track setup!!! yeah for me :)

I run SSR-Competition wheels.

17x7.5 front with Toyo RA-1 235/45-17
17x9.5 rear with Toyo RA-1 275/40-17

No problems with traction control, and a little rubbing up front at full lock.
I also use a 10mm spacer up front to clear my BBK.

Thanks for the replies.

Couple of other questions. My 17/18 SSR Gt1s are pretty scratched up. So I was debating making those my track rims and ordering something nice as my street rims. However, theorectically, it is cheaper and FASTER? to go with 17/17's. What do you guys think.

Would I be better off(performance wise/financially) with 17/17's as track rims and get the scratches fixed up on my SSR's or should I just use the 17/18 SSRs at track rims and get something nice(Volks or Works).

Sorry for all the confusion.

The GT1's are pretty light. Under 20lbs each, I believe.
If I were you, I'd make them track rims and buy a new set for the street.

Work Emotion CR, these are used by a lot of tuners for their track cars in Japan. (Evo's, Silvia's, Wrx's)

I would go with 235/40/17 and 275/35/18 with the 17x8 and 18x9.5 rears

I had the 17x7.5 SSR Integrals (similar in design to the GT1's) on my Prelude with 215/40/17 tires and I bent all 4 of them during regular street driving on the roads here in CA which are reasonably good, I would personally *NOT* use anything that resembles that wheel as a track wheel. A 205/40/17 would probably be brutal on that wheel.

Just my 2 cents

So ken, what do you use for your track rims?

I am looking at the Work TM1's as my street rims and the SSR's as my track rims for now or the Emotions as my street rims and SSR's as track rims

I've been using my NSX in HPDE 4 (NASA) for a year now and use my stock 16" rims on front with RA-1 225/50's and rear 17" with RA-1 265/40's. I still use the stock calipers with Brembo slotted rotors, Carbotech Panther pads, SS lines and ATE fluid, which still works fine for me.

I have a set of older 16"/17" HRE's with Toyo T1S's for the street.

Hey Ritesh,

Currently I have 2 sets of Prodrive GC07's 17x7.5 18x9.5 that I use with 205/40/17 and 275/35/18 RA1's or 215/40/17 275/35/18 SO3's. I also have a set of Prodrive GC010 17x7.5 18x9.5 with SO3's. And recently I purchased some 17x8 and 18x9.5 Volk CE28n's to use along the 235/40/17 275/35/18 RA1's.

Steve (SMGNSX) uses the Work Emotion CR's on his track NSX, send him a PM for feedback about his setup. The Work Emotion CR should allow you to run either a 205/40/17 or a 235/40/17 up front for the RA1.

Given a choice I would probably run a 235/40/17 and 275/35/18 combo. The price on the Work Wheels are pretty reasonable about 60% of the price of the Prodrive or the Volk wheels that I have.

As I mentioned, I would be very leery about using a 205/40/17 wheel on a SSR wheel, the SSR wheels use a forging technique called SSF vs what Rays uses for their Volk wheels (BTW: Prodrive wheels are also manufactured by Rays) I'm yet to bend any of my Prodrive wheels on the NSX, so based on that experience I believe that they are stronger than the SSR's
