Has anyone with stock 91-93 rims installed wider rear tires?
The current rubber is 205/50-15 frt, 225/50-16 rr. The Yokohama dealer had suggested I change my rears to 245/45-16 (no TCS problems as rolling diameter is the same as the stock 225/50-16 tire : the tire tread would be 1.25" wider due to a more square tread/sidewall). I had a look at their track car and sure enough the tire tread was more square with the rim ( the sidewall was not bulging ) and the tread was aproximately an inch wider . There didnot appear to be any interference problems either. They claim they have no problems on the track or driving on the street (re: understeer, ect)and enjoy increased cornering limits. The stock front size is maintained as there are no 215/45-15
sizing available.
Has anyone tried this combo? Are there any problems to be wary of?
Thanks.

Did the dealer show you the new tire on an NSX?

I'm sure nsxtasy will answer soon enough, but from what I gathered from his previous posts....a wider tire doesn't equal a bigger contact patch. I'll stop here and wait for his reply.

If he doesn't email him.

There are no major technical reasons you couldn't. TCS won't be thrown off and that treadwidth is usually approved for tires that size. However, you won't be able to get the great-handling OEM tires, and that switch will probably degrade handling more than the wider tire size would help (if at all). Also, you will want to use the same model tire front and rear, which may mean buying four tires instead of two. Your choice; try it if you want...

Thanks, I should mention that I am changing all 4 tires due to a warranty issue. The tires I purchased a year ago are being warrantied by the manufacturer (buying them back at my original cost less depreciation of aprox 20% for tire wear ) as they are making too much noise at hwy speeds. Also as it is a warranty issue, the manufacturer is covering the cost of install/ balance as well. The only hitch is that I must buy a Yokohama brand tire.
.......
In reply to the previous post......the tires I saw installed were installed on a 1992 NSX with stock factory rims. I was able to compare that vehicle to mine, side by side. The advantage of the 245 size was that where my 225 tread curled at the edge of the tire......the 245 went straight to the edge (squared off if you are following my lame description). With a ruler there was certainly about an inch extra tread width on the ground although in extreme cornering I suppose its hard to say if the suspension camber would hold the tire to the ground or not. The overall width of the tire carcas was about a quarter of an inch wider (I think).
.........
These guys track their car at Mosport and claim the extra width
helps reduce oversteer in extreme situations with negligible compromises. I don't know?.....I've always had stock tire sizes .

I run 245/45/15 Kuhmo R compound tires on the track rat. I wanted the shorter sidewalls and the flatter tread surface for the track. Since I have not run 225/50 R compound tires on the same car, I cannot remark as to any difference or improvement they would give.

Can you guys take a picture of the 245/45/16 tire on the car? I'm curious to see how "flat/squared" it looks on the wheel. Thanks.

Don't you mean 245/45-16?

Thanks Ken. Yes it is a 16" stock wheel.
