91 keyless entry - the truth.....

So I have been told many things about the 91 optional keyless entry system and have been trying to find one for 4 years now.
With help from TimB and others and ripping my glove box out, I now have come up with the following. I will correct any mistakes if I am proven wrong.
I have posted the Manual that came with the system.
The system comes with the Brain (Control Unit), Two remotes (Transmitters) and Nsx Transmitter covers, a short Wire Harness that is not in your car, a short Antenna and various mounting stuffs.
In your 91 you will find a 8 pin female connector taped to a main wire harness behind your glove box. The tape is blue. This connector needs an adapter cable that it plugs into before that adapter cable plugs into the Brain (Control Unit).
Once again this connector cable is not in your car, it must be with the kit.
The connector cable has two loose wires on the 8 pin side that must be plugged into another module that is under your dash. It all appears simple once you read the instructions.
Once all this is done, you simple plug this adapter cable into your Brain, also plug in your Antenna that came with your kit into your Brain and away you go.
Anything for the Nsx should have the designation SL0 in the product number.
If it doesn't, then its not specific for the Nsx and who knows if it will work or not. Only way is to test it or have someone verify that it works cause they did it or have it.
I have checked now and in the past for parts or whole units from Acura, even at one time wanting to get them to let me contact the builders into building me 20 kits. No chance of that or getting any parts, even just the wire harness.
I believe the 92 car is the same as the 91.
The 93 is different in that the adapter wire is not needed. Maybe more as well. This I have not researched.

08E60-SL0-201 is 91 - obsolete, no longer available
08E60-SL0-200 is 92 - obsolete, no longer available
08E60-SL0-201F is 93 - 05 currently available but only for those model years.

So is there any kind of solution for those with a 91-92? Is there an aftermarket kit that can plug in the factory harness to control door locks and alarm activation? Or is the best solution to get a completely aftermarket kit to control door locks and replace the alarm?

Prime member NSX1566 and I have been discussing a possible modification to the aftermarket solution that would also trigger the alarm. I just received a copy of the 1991 OEM KES install manual which describes connecting two wires to the security control unit. We believe these wires might be signals to arm and disarm the system. If so, then the aftermarket alarm I installed in my car may be able to interface with the security control unit to also arm and disarm the factory alarm. After I have some time to test that theory, I'll report my findings here.

Good Info here. There are a lot of misconceptions about these.

I am so grateful that the PO of my car had a keyless entry installed before they were discontinued.

I can't help but wonder if it would be possible to convert a 93-02 keyless brain. If one of our electrical engineers rose to the challenge, he might find it worth the while to come up with a painless plug-and-play solution, a la Smartenna or WhiteNSX’s HID kit. If someone sold a kit containing a currently-available yet converted for 91-92 brain, connectors, and detailed instructions, I’d buy it.
If someone made a plug-and-play for the 91-92’s of ANY sort, I’d be interested.

I still have a theory that Acura Legend or Vigor Keyless Entry systems will work with '91-'92 NSXs. Here is why I think this:

1. I have seen an NSX (SL0) part numbered keyless entry system on a Legend.
2. The keyless entry system in my NSX has a Legend (SP1) part number, and it works exactly like it is supposed to work.
3. The label on these keyless entry modules says "Acura Keyless Entry System" and not "Acura NSX Keyless Entry System.
4.Part number 08E61-SP1-2000-C2 is for '91-'95 Acura Legends (2-dr). This one is installed and working properly in my 1994 NSX right now.
5. This Acura Service Bulletin..


Part number 08E60-SP0-200R2 is for '92-95 Legends and '92-'94 Vigors. I am almost certain this would be a direct replacement for 1991 and 1992 NSXs. If my theory is correct, no modifying is required. It should plug right in just like in the installation structions.

Please post your full part number today if possible please.
It still leaves us without the wire harness, but that could be figured out and made up.

A $235 expiriment.

Is that how much it is? Yes, it is an experiment. But if someone tries it and it works, then the door to keyless is opened to a lot of early owners. I’d be the guinea pig myself but right now I just don’t have the $ to spend unless I KNOW. Plus, my electrical chops are so feeble I’d get stuck at the first glitch.
Anybody out there thinking about giving this a shot?

Go do your research, install your system, post a new thread and tell us all what you did.
Maybe you can convert us guys that want to have an oem system.
Watch back here in case we have some breaking news on the Oem system for the 91-92.

I wanted a simple system that LOOKED oem. I didn't care if it was ACTUALLY oem. I did not want a full-on aftermarket alarm because I don't want to carry a "lump" of keys/fob in my pocket. It seems most of the remotes nowadays are 2-way and have LCD screens, 5 buttons, and a bunch of extraneous stuff I don't want or need. My aftermarket keyless system cost me $20, and I think it looks plain enough to pass off as a factory option.

If I can figure out the alarm triggering thing, it will, in my mind, be the preferred alternative to hunting down an oem KES. In fact, I think mine does even more than the factory system since I can remotely pop my trunk, and it flashes the lights and sounds a beeper to confirm I've pressed the remote button.

Some of us guys are just stockers, that’s all. I know where to get aftermarket keyless (complete with trunk pop) installed for $49.95 but haven’t done it because no one can tell me what the alarm will (or won’t) do.
It is completely coincidental, but it looks like I have just now bought a ’91 system still in the bag from the parts section. Once I have it in hand I’ll at least try to do a side-by-side comparison with the Legend/Vigor unit before I put it into the car.:smile:

I have a 1995 JDM NSX that came with keyless entry as standard.

The part number on my system is: 08E52-SL0-0000-01

I was wondering how difficult it would be to get a new remote/fob to suit?
 
So... are you guys saying that the whole '91-'92 system is unavailable as a package, or that all the parts are also unavailable? I think my '92 came with the system, but the remote I got from the previous owner fell apart when I got the car. Don't know where it is now. I would rather be able to get a new remote than have to install a whole new system.

The 1991-1992 system is believed to be no longer obtainable, in the United States at least. No dealership seems to have any.:frown:

You should be able to purchase a remote and have it programmed at the dealer, however.:smile:
 
Last I checked, the OEM systems weren't plug and play to begin with. Anyone thinking of going keyless should at the very minimum look at the keyless entry systems offered by companies like DEI. You will have a better remote, better range, better support, more features, it's a win/win situation overall. Going full on alarm will get you even more features. If you can tackle the OEM keyless, you can probably tackle an aftermarket one. If not, just pay some alarm shop like $100-200 and I bet you they can install a quality aftermarket unit for you. These units run under $50. They can pop your trunk unlike the OEM keyless and do a whole bunch of other things. Trust me, the OEM system if you want to call it that, pales in comparison in every way.

The OEM keyless is garbage, D'Ecosse and I have been trying to steer people away from these for years. Your best bet, print out that security control unit schematic from the manual, take it to your local alarm shop and tell them to install keyless for you. :)

On other cars with power locks I've driven, the key works all of them from both sides. Want to make sure it's working the way it's supposed to before going to an install shop.

Use the key on the driver's door, unlock just the driver's door.
Use the key on the passenger's door, unlock both.
