I have recently looked at a '97 auto that has a high pitched (almost squeal) when turning rightwhile sitting still, the noise geos away after driving for an a hour or so.
NSX is electric power assist steering and thus NO belt. Mine 91 had the same issue and worst, replaced with a used unit and still make the noise now and then. Otherwise its working fine. A new rack is priced out of this world. Now with the yen going up daily, almost up to US$ 5k?
Bump from the dead. My car recently started doing this (squeak while turning RIGHT only, sounds like it's coming from the steering column. I have parked it for fear of making the problem worse but haven't invesitigated beyond that.
anyone seen this before? What did it end up being?
Contact Matt. D1Guy here on Prime. He is the guru for fixing NSX steering rack's whether they be manuals or EPS. Send it to him and it will be fixed like new. Tell him JC said hi.
So I've confirmed that the noise also occurs when the key is not in the ignition - I would assume this means none of the systems on the car are powered. Unless the power steering rack gets power all the time?
When I have time I am planning to drop the steering rack and send it over to D1Guy to rebuild. I took it to a local NSX specialist and they diagnosed the noise as being internal to the steering rack, and recommended swapping the rack as they were unwilling to tear into it.
I had this noise over 3 years. Noise goes away when it's cold. That high pitch scratching noise from bearing in the rack.
I talked to d1 guy. About bearing. Unfortunately only one company makes this size of bearing and it's secret. Soon or later i have to take it out and send to d1guy to rebuild mine.
