Prospeed NSX Thermal Intake Gaskets

Hi Primers,

I would like to introduce a new product to the NSX community! The Prospeed Thermal Intake Gaskets for the NSX. I originally wanted to make these about 5 years ago and actually started on them but never got the time to get them completed. Fast forward to a few months ago... a fellow primer L_RAO wanted me to look into it again and build a set for his project.... well it's finally here and I am offering it to the NSX community.

Research and Development:

Insulating intake gaskets are nothing new to automobiles. It is a cheap and effective way to reduce intake temps due to the material and thickness of the gasket. This reduces the transfer of heat from the engine head to the intake manifold. A quick Google search and you can see some huge intake temp drops from 10°F to 30°F! Most OEM intake gaskets use either paper or metal in their gasket material.... both are not good at insulating heat transfer.

Honda did their research and actually designed a phenolic gasket with a rubber seal that is superior to both paper and gasket. I believed there was still room for improvement going with a thicker material and improved insulating material. I needed to test it to see if there are any gains to be made.

This info is from Hondata's website http://www.hondata.com/heatshieldgasket.html

"Fact: For every 3.3 °C (5° F) rise in intake temperature, air density drops 1%. The hotter the air, the less fuel the computer injects to compensate for reduced oxygen. HondaLogger datalogging software has enabled us to measure intake air temperature under varied driving conditions.

Around town, testing has shown an average drop of around 10 degrees C which is good for around 3 percent power increase. Remember though that 3 percent power increase is difficult to feel. You'd feel a greater change in performance getting rid of that passenger. In certain conditions a 30° C drop has been measured."

I wasn't expecting huge gains but somewhere in the range of 5 to 10°F cooler intake temps with the Prospeed Thermal Intake Gasket alone.. I also wanted to do a coolant bypass mod to reduce intake air temps. I bypassed the coolant line under the throttle body, Fast Idle Valve and Intake Air Control Valve (IACV). I wanted to see how both of them work together to maximize temp drops.

I used a digital ambient thermometer, infrared digital thermometer gun and custom data logging via laptop to monitor intake air temps through the OEM IAT sensor.

Results:
Here are the results.... There are a lot of variables when it comes to testing temperature... I tried my very best to eliminate as much variables as possible by always measuring the temps on the manifold in the same location and distance. I also made sure rest times were identical. All road testing was done on the same route and same throttle percentage to duplicate similar conditions.

Conclusion:
As you can see we were able to get some great results from the Prospeed Thermal Intake Gaskets and coolant bypass mod. I spent hours and hours testing this and the results were always the same... It works as advertised =)
After a hard run I was even able to place my hand on the intake manifold because of the intake temp drops... =)

The Coolant bypass mod bypasses the throttle body, Fast Idle Valve and Idle Air Control Valve. Besides taking it a little longer to warm up when cold there has been no side effects. The car idles and runs great. I don't recommend anyone in freezing temps to to the coolant bypass mod as it could cause your throttle body to stick.

All in all, I was extremely please with both the Prospeed intake gaskets and bypass mod and this is a great mod for any NSX... naturally aspirated, turbo, or supercharged.

Why get the Prospeed Thermal Intake gaskets?

-Fits all NSX's 91-05
-We use a special high temp plastic that is precision machined for perfect fitment. High quality gaskets.
-Better price over OEM. OEM intake gaskets are over $150 for a pair retail.
-Lower intake temps= cooler intake charge= more horsepower!
-Intake temp drops from 10°F up to 20°F with coolant bypass mod.
-Keeps temps down and cools quicker for less heat bog and more power on tap.
-Great for turbo and supercharger guys looking to cool down intake charge.
-Completely reusable just like OEM gasket.
-Easy to install. Takes less than 30 mins.
-Installation instructions included.
-Made in the USA.

Retail: $100

Special Introductory Price for first 15 buyers only!
Price: $85 Shipped to any address in continental U.S.

PM me or email me at [email protected] to place your order.

Thanks again guys!

Great job, Brian.

Can't wait for our next big meeting.

  • Ported intake manifold + 74 mm Blox throttle body
  • Prospeed cold air intake
  • Prospeed intake manifold gaskets
  • Prospeed high-flow cats
  • Prospeed exhaust system
  • Prospeed ROM REV.2

Geometro, actually I have the thermal bolt washers here ready to be included in the kit :) if you're gonna do it why not go all the way!

Thanks Loc.... Thanks to your push the NSX community will benefit again. Looking forward to getting some good power to the ground with your car!

Appreciate the fast response prospeed.

Is there any plan to make a throttle body spacer kit to maximize insulating the intake manifold while not running the coolant bypass?

It's funny you mentioned this cause I always thought about it as well... I actually forgot that the NSX already has an insulating throttle body spacer... While doing my temp testing with no coolant bypass... I found that the throttle body actually ran consistently 4-5°F cooler than the intake manifold right by the spacer. With the coolant bypass mod... the throttle body and intake manifold runs significantly cooler and you could even put your hand on it after a hard run without swearing! lol I think I have a picture of me testing this somewhere... I'll post it up when I get a chance.

Thanks for the orders guys!! I have these on hand and ready to ship! I have 10 spots left! Great price and a great product!

All of the investment, installation, and testing is done and all for a price better than the OEM gaskets. =)
Installation surprisingly was easy... Make sure you have the car cool, take off the intake manifold covers and fuel injector covers. Next remove the fuel line from the fuel rail and there is only 4 bolts and 4 nuts to remove that hold the intake manifold to the heads. That's it! Have someone help you lift it up as you reach between the intake manifold and head and replace the gaskets on both sides and reverse order everything and bam you're done... It took me less than 30 mins.

geometro,

Heres a pic of before and after the throttle body gasket/spacer that the NSX uses. These pics are before the coolant bypass mod so you have that hot coolant running underneath the throttle body and FIV and IACV.

Here's another example of the temp difference between the head before the Prospeed NSX thermal gaskets and after the gasket on the intake manifold flange... big difference in temps!

Head temperature about 1/2 inch before the Prospeed thermal gasket

Intake manifold temperature about a 1/4 inch after the Prospeed thermal gasket

hhhm, I wonder if this will help with heat soak issues at all on the track.

It will most definitely help. The idea of the thermal gasket allows your manifold to cool quicker and stay colder longer which allows your engine to produce the most power it can produce all the time instead of at the end of a full throttle pass. This will help if you are driving around town in stop and go conditions or on a track.

If you have an AEM EMS or a way to datalog IAT's, you will instantly see the difference these gaskets make. This is extremely important for turbo and supercharged guys since you want to prevent detonation from high IAT's.

Brian,

i want a set, please give me a total with shipping to Lisbon 1800, Portugal through USPS Priority.

I can only send the payment next sunday, as i'm on vacations away from home. Can you hold this spot for me until then?

Thanks,
Nuno

PS - do you send instructions on how to do the coolant bypasses??

Just got it today, look great. Thanks

Glad you like it! Let me know how it goes... Guys I will be sending everyone an installation guide via their emails by tomorrow so keep your eyes peeled.

I have only 1 spots left for the intro price of $85. Pm me if you want it. Thanks!

I took the last spot and sent in the payment via paypal Brian
