Moving to LA... I have some Questions

Try the apartments on LAUREL AVE between Sunset and Hollywood Blvd. The street is pretty wide and the apartments have good underground parking. Also, they still may have rent control there. Going to Cedars is about 10min. max, and the apartments are walking distance to Equinox gym, Trader Joe's, the Laugh Factory, Greenblatt's deli, and the Sunset Strip. This area is more Hollywood than West Hollywood, but the rent seems to be more reasonable and the drive to Cedars is just down La Cienega.

I will check that out, Thanks!

Depending on what time your shifts are, Pasadena may be a good option.

1. Housing (as well as parking) is more spacious than the Westside. It is nowhere nearly as congested.
2. Rents are a better value.
3. You would get to drive the 110 twice a day.

If you can avoid the downtown traffic, you can get to Cedars from Pasadena in 20 minutes.

Hmm, I am guessing your from there L_RAO. Ill look into that as well thanks for the info man. If you are still in need of the id725 if I do bring my car down I will lend them to you for your testing.

I did find a decent place in Studio city. It is about 7.9 miles from cedars. It has a gated parking, would you guys trust gated parking with out individuals? I would be able to take laurel canyon to work every day.

Thanks for the offer.

Studio City is too congested for my tastes.

Of course, what you could do is come down before moving and give each of the recommended areas a feeler. A certain area's vibe might work better for you than another's.

Agree with the 110! If you can drive the stretch of the 110 from Downtown to Pasadena everyday i'd be jealous. Of course that's assuming it's not rush hour. Rush hour is horrible as with virtually anywhere in LA unless you happen to be going against traffic. It's something you do get use to and live with. With that said, that's why I moved to Culver City even after living in Alhambra/Pasadena all my life.

There are certain areas in Culver City, West LA, Mar Vista, Westchester that fit your criteria. This would be west of Cedars. I probably wouldn't bother looking south into Crenshaw, nor into West Hollywood/Silverlake (unless you wanted to be with all the hippies). I wouldn't even bother looking in Koreatown or Miracle Mile (the roads are just horrible), but I would most certainly look further east like in Downtown (if you can live with the higher HOAs), then Monterey Park (if good asian food is important to you), then Alhambra, and then Pasadena. I probably wouldn't look any further into San Gabriel, Temple City, Arcadia, West Covina unless you were prepared for at least a 40+ min commute. AGain, this is all speaking in terms of rush hour. If your schedule allowed you to commute on off-hours then virtually everywhere in LA is 20-30 mins from Cedars. Oh, and I wouldn't bother looking into the valley (Studio City, Encino, North Hollywood, etc). Commuting thru one of the canyon artery roads (i.e. Laurel Canyon) that run thru the Hollywood hills SUCK during rush hour. However, I drive thru there often in the middle of the night and up Mulholland once in a while. The roads are fun at speed :)

Like I said earlier, Cedars is in a prime part of town. To stay within $1000/mon rent and have some semblance of a garage you need to expect at least a 30 mins commute.

I work in Brentwood but live in Culver City. It's only 7 miles and it still takes me 20 mins to drive to/from work.

If you find specific areas just post on here and we'll comment. Most of these towns have good and bad areas.

I like the idea of Studio City in that it is central to the westside, downtown, hollywood, etc. I take Laurel Canyon from Studio City almost everyday, and I must say that it is probably the fastest canyon to get from the valley to the west side. As long as you can get to Ventura Blvd and Laurel Canyon by 7:30am, traffic is overall not an issue because once you hit Mulholland, it's cruise control to Sunset. With little or no traffic, you'll be at Sunset Blvd from Ventura Blvd in about 10-12minutes. After 7:30am, it might take you about 20-25minutes because of traffic at Mulholland. Laurel is probably the fastest route compared to the other canyons i.e. Coldwater, Beverly Glen, and the Hollywood Fwy. If I don't leave the house by 6am to get to Beverly Hills by way of the Hollywood Fwy, I take Laurel Cyn--the quickest and most direct way to Cedars from Studio City in the morning. On the other hand, if you drive back home in rush hour, Laurel Cyn along with the other canyons will be packed! Best alternative: Beverly Glen to Ventura Blvd, or Roscomare Rd via West Gate of Bel-Air (residential). Good Luck!

Just buy a CBR 250 and you won't have a problem with traffic or gas:wink:

How about a honda ruckus? I am working on a 150cc gy6 swap ruckus but It will not be done in time. Plus I will be busy with school to work on it. I have a stock ruckus as well, I will probably bring it down but I wont be able to go on the freeway.

Maybe you'll want to live in W.Ho/Silverlake afterall :)

I have a GSXR 750 and I just don't find much fun riding it on the LA streets for some reason. Just my $0.02. I could see it being more fun on other less congested cities. I pretty much have to leave town to have fun on two wheels.

would be fun, but the stock ruckus is only 49cc. I wouldnt be able to go too far.

I didn't ride much when I lived there as well, which is the reason I suggested the 250cc for the commute. Rukus will be fine if you live close enough, just need to pay attention to EVERY driver.

Palos Verdes is real nice, but I am far happier now that my commute is to El Segundo and not Santa Monica...couldn't imagine commuting up to Cedars, though, if you do consider the South Bay, you could probably keep your travel times more consistent by taking the 405 to La Cienega. Forget going through downtown or the 405/10 interchange.

What do you think about the 110 up to cedars? or 405 to venice ave?

We're talking from Torrance (aka. The South Bay) right?

I think from Torrance, up the 405, is not horrible (not great, but not bad, 40mph?). It tends to bunch up right around the Venice Blvd exit going North on the 405. You might be ok if you exited here and headed East on Venice and up La Cienega (or one of the other artery streets like La Brea, Supelveda) from there. All this still makes for a 35-45min est commute though.

I agree the 10fwy/405fwy intersection should be avoided. Actually my commute everyday is up Sawtelle from Marina Del Rey to Brentwood. I have the option to take the 405 up and whenever I do I regret it.
