I just picked up a 1989 Legend with 840 KM on it. I am quite excited about this and cant wait to get i into my garage. I have setup an appointment with the local Acura dealer to perform a TB/WP, change all of the fluids and etc maintenence. Total expected cost of this service is about $2000. I really wanted a gold one but hey how many 840 KM Legends are left out there. This one is white and in pretty decent shape.

This was donated by Honda Canada to an educational facility and has subsequently sat for the last 20 years. The instructor recived the car as part of his retirement package and he sold it to a dealership which I bought it from.

Pics or ban:wink:

Rude question, but how much would an 89 Legend with 840kms go for? At my home town dealership they have a 1 million km older accord that's in great shape.

Contact Prime member 4cruizn. He knows all things Legend related.
Ha, thanks for the tip, Kelvin! I certainly don't know "all things" Legend but I've owned 8 of them and been an active member of the online enthusiast community for a decade and been to all 8 NALMs (Nat'l Acura Legend Meet).

A 1989 with 500 miles on it is a truly rare find. As with any 23 year old car that's sat most of its life, you already know it'll need some help to bring it up to any kind of solid mechanical condition. A friend who works for Honda told me once that the cars used for "training" end up getting crushed or disposed of because they're no longer saleable. Yours must not have been among those.

As for resale value, aside from a couple examples (a last-production-year, 1995 LS Coupe 6MT with ultra-low miles, for example) the Legend isn't really a collector car. Your post didn't specify whether the car's a coupe or sedan, stick or automatic, Base, L, or LS Trim. Those factors will all greatly weigh into the overall desirability of the vehicle. Pictures would be great.

Check out the Acura Legend Forums, 1st Generation section for some great information. The Wiki Page there will also help address some of the basic questions about the model and its history.

Good luck with the new acquisition and congratulations!

Its a 2 dr coupe 2.7L loaded with leather in an automatic. This car has neverbeen registered and I had checked with my Acura dealer to have the VIN searched. It can be registered. I know it will not be a collector's car but it is sort of neat to have this. I plan to have the servicing done and drive it. I figure what new car can you buy nowadays that can compare in value for $17,000. I dont have any pictures yet. It is in their storage facility until spring when I go to pick up.

Legend pricing in Japan is on the rise old coups are worth more than 96-04 models already.

over here in Europe they are extremely rare, i'd say nearly as rare as a NSX.
Although a Honda legend is a bit more upscale than a Acura Legend.

Great cars!

I had a 86 4dr 5 speed manual and a 92 4dr 5 speed manny ... I loved them both but kids started breaking into them for parts so I sold them and kept moving up the Acura line till now. I currently just have the 91 Nsx and 08 TLS

What's it worth? It's virtually impossible to assign a specific market value to a one-of-a-kind car, because you can't find half a dozen similar cars on the market with which to compare prices.

That being said, I think the $17K you paid sounds like a fair price to me for a car with 500 miles on it, even if it needs some TLC!

17K seems way too high. It's still a 25 year old car that's probably rotted out.

Sounds like a beautiful car but I agree that the price is too high. I can see your reasoning that you're getting a "new" relatively high end car for the price of a used Civic. It will depreciate very quickly if you start driving it though. Good luck with it.

very Prelude/Accord-coupe 'esque of that era...

Interesting find... best of luck w/ it!

What's the general consensus towards the two gen's of Legen Coupes w/ regards to personal preference (ie. gen-1: 86-'90 coupe, gen-2: '91-'95 coupe)?

I was big, big admirer of the gen-2 Legend Coupe, L/LS trim, especially the 6spd. examples (and Type-II motors). Even the base models did it for me. Apart from the NSX, there was no other (sporty/luxo') car that I wanted back then! I loved the gen-2 Legend platform, whether sedan (cool!) or coupe (hot!)... :D

Price too high? Compared to what? It's not like there are others out there like this and he paid more than the next 3. It's like everything else. It's worth what someone is willing to pay for it. Even if it was $20k, you can't buy another one exactly like it.

Agreed. I just wonder if he doesn't register or drive it, will it be worth some big money down the road?

I had an 89 coupe L. Overall the best car I ever had (outside my NSX). Way better put together than my 02 TL. I see a lot of the Legend in my NSX, just mad from Aluminum instead of steel.

As for cost, I'm thinking 17,000 is in Canadian money.

Not sure if you have looked at the exchange rate lately, but its 1:1
Almost exactly! I've never seen two floating currencies have a closer exchange rate than right now. According to one site I just checked, 1 CAD = 0.998801 USD and 1 USD = 1.00120 CAD.

So yeah, he may have paid $17,000 in Canadian dollars, but that's $16,979.62 in U.S. dollars.
