Hey that's a nice attempt :)
This photo would benefit from a horizontal crop (so you have less "empty" upper and lower sections). Another way of doing it would be to use a longer focal lens and thus to provide more background details, but at the cost of losing your village on the left + trees on the right composition... But otherwise you got it :)

Oh it is, that new shot on top is perfect, the clouds fill in the upper part of the frame nicely, and the composition is good.
It's all about the light ! Get a good light, with good background, your foreground subject is beautiful already, then your old digicam can make it :)
If shooting in natural light that means getting at the right place, at the right time... can be time consuming, but worth it.
