This photo would benefit from a horizontal crop (so you have less "empty" upper and lower sections). Another way of doing it would be to use a longer focal lens and thus to provide more background details, but at the cost of losing your village on the left + trees on the right composition... But otherwise you got it

Oh it is, that new shot on top is perfect, the clouds fill in the upper part of the frame nicely, and the composition is good.
It's all about the light ! Get a good light, with good background, your foreground subject is beautiful already, then your old digicam can make it
If shooting in natural light that means getting at the right place, at the right time... can be time consuming, but worth it.
